The pipefish is a fairly recent addition. I haven't been feeding the tank that much but I've noticed that my Carpenter wrasse was getting really fat. I took a closer look and noticed that the pod population is going nuts. I'd seen the pipefish in the LFS for the past two months, they said that they hadn't really been feeding it, but that it just eats pods. So I bought it.

It's doing all right so far. It will it cyclop-eeze but that's about it. Actually, I was hoping that it would explore more of the tank, but it just sits in the front hovering most of the time. It'll occasionally go back in a cave but that's about as far as it goes. Not intimidated by the other fish (the gramma and wrasse go at it every once in a while). It's only been a week, hopefully it'll get a little more active.

what was the determining factor in deciding on that particular # of fish??? Was it tank size, filtration, swimming room etc.

In my 120g sps/clam tank I have the following:
2 green chromis{from cycling the tank in 1998}
1 gold stripe maroon clown{moved from the 180g when it was sold}
1 copperband butterfly{also moved from the 180g and has been with me for 5 1/2 yrs.}
1 tomini tang
1 genicanthus semifasciatus
1 false lemonpeel centropyge angel{going on 7 years}
1 foxface
1 sixline wrasse

The tank has lots of movement with plenty of swimming in front of rock, behind rock and through the rock. No more fish for now as everyone gets along and are happy.

Corals are growing great as well as my clams.

Re: How many fish do you have ???

It seems like I remember the guy who owns the tank back in post #22 getting flamed pretty severely for not only the amount of fish but also for his choice of fish. He has some pretty hard to keep stuff. Usually when I see a tank that looks like that I think that person just has alot of money and just buys/replaces as needed or desired. It seems like I remember him defending himself pretty well but he never did really answer how he was able to keep that many fish or how he was able to keep the rare ones.

For myself I have a 30 gallon fowlr with a cocoa damnsel and a neon goby. I also have a 40ish gallon hex reef tank with a cherub angel, rainford's goby, and an engineer goby. I actually feel bad because I consider both tanks to be grossly overstocked. I wish I didn't have the engineer goby but he is a refugee from years ago when I had a bigger tank and I couldn't find it another home. He does seem content though. The upside of it is my guilt about overstocking drives me to stay on top of the maintenance. The older I get and the more I observe fish in the wild the less I able to convince myself that keeping marine fish is alright. I will never own another damnsel after this one because they keep such large territories in the wild. I never have nor will I ever own a tang. IMO, even public aquariums do not provide them with enough room.
So getting off my soapbox and returning to the point of the thread. Why did I pick the fish I have? I am in love with the cherubs and rainford's. I did not choose the cocoa damsel, he was just destroying a friends reef and rather than watch him get flushed, I gave him a home. The neon goby is just cool and was supposed to be in my reef but he wouldn't stop irritating my clam so he had to go. I really feel I chose poorly on the engineer goby now, but when I originally bought it I chose it because I really wanted an eel but an eel wouldn't cohabitate with some of the other stuff I had. The engineer was the next best choice. So I have 5 fish in two tanks and I chose to stop at that number because of concerns of not providing enough room.

IME fish is what really got me hooked in the Hobby, it's been very difficult to convince myself though the years not to overstock my tanks and to keep my bioload reasonable.

Re: How many fish do you have ???

In my 180g mixed reef:

1 x Sm. Foxface Rabbitfish
1 x Tiny Regal Tang
1 x Flame Hawkfish
1 x Longnose Hawkfish
2 x False Perc Clowns
1 x Copperbanded Butterfly
1 x Male Bimaculatus Anthias
2 x Female Bimaculatus Anthias
1 x Sixline Wrasse
1 x Canary Fang Blenny
1 x Royal Gramma

I guess that makes 13 total...I chose my fish for a number of reasons; here are some things I think about when planning for fish:

Hardiness (can I keep it alive?)
Compatability - aggressive/territorial?
Color - mix it up (one fish two fish red fish blue fish)
"Personality" - how can you not love a flame hawk?
Suitability in Reef - I've got lots of corals/inverts too
SIZE - smaller IS better in my opinion/experience LOL
Territorial tendencies (free swimming/perching/bottom dweller/suspended?)
Personal Prior Experiences and/or published info

These aren't in particular order, but all are things I definitely think about before making a stocking decision.
