Fish ID please

I have recently seen a fish that I'm unfamiliar with and would like an ID if at all possible please. I know the quality of the photos isn't good but they are the best ones I have. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Is that saltwater?

Looks like a cichlid... or a cross between a killifish and a jack dempsey!

Travis, it is a saltwater fish. I don't even know where to start looking for the ID on this fish. It's a bottom dwelling fish and has an extremely flexible body. It can move it's head back and forth without moving the rest of the body. It's a very alert fish that follows all movement around.

That tail and the blunt nose reminds me of saltwater killifish I used to collect. You might start there.

Possibly the hardiest saltwater fish on the planet...

Michelle - any ideas where it originated from? Might be one to ask for help from John Randall. I checked tilefish, sand perches, and weed blennies - but there were obvious differences in most genus. ????????

I don't believe it is a killifish (fundulus sp.) because of the dorsal spines. The dorsal fin would be set farther back and only be composed of soft rays.

It does look a bit like a serranidae to me, but I can't tell from the picture alone. If it is possible to count or take a picture of the dorsal spines and anal rays that would be an awesome way to id it, esp. if you have any ideas on where it came from.
The pelvic fins don't look familiar with any groupers I'm familiar with.

Is there a spot on the anterior portion of the dorsal fin?
I was thinking it looks kind of like Calloplesiops altivelis (Marine comet, marine betta).

No, I don't know where it came from and unfortunately it's a picture from a fish in the LFS. I don't know if it'll be possible to get a better picture.

It's not a marine betta, it's got the wrong body shape and it's definately a bottom dwelling fish.

LOL Eek, yes I'm sure it's not a freshwater fish!

We have finally ID'ed it for those of you who are curious!

Plesiops corallicola

If you have a fast connection I also have a small video clip (1.3MB clip) of it on my website. (I know I messed up with page formating.)

http://www.fishtanksandponds.net/mov...cola_movie.htm

It's commonly found in Indo-Pacific: Madagascar to the Line Islands; north to southern Japan, south to the southern Great Barrier Reef and Tonga. Throughout Micronesia.
