Adding fish - is it stressfull??

Do you think existing fish get stressed out when you add new fish to the tank? If so, How can you lessen that stress?

It's probably stressful in the sense that they have established their territory and don't want the new addition encroaching on it, but I think that the new addition is probably much more stressed then the already established fish.
