What kind of eel is this? (Solved - Engineer Goby)

Hello,

Over the weekend, I stumbled on an opportunity to adopt several fish and an eel! The parents of the previous owner do not know what kind of eel this is or what it was being fed. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Primary colors are yellow and brown and length is approximately 8-10".

Many thanks!
Nathan

It kinda looks like an adult engineer goby.

+1 for the Engineer goby. they are great at sifting sand, but also great at covering stuff up on your sand bed so be careful with that one.

Wow! Thanks for the prompt response. Appears I was looking in the wrong fish family! I had no clue this was a goby, as the pictures I have seen show the engineer as a juvenile with horizontal stripes. Fascinating! No wonder he wasn't interested in eating the silversides I was dangling in front of him. And to think he could bite me !

Definitely an engineer.
Don't keep any small fish in the tank. They will become dinner.
Very cool fish to watch.
Mine is also a bigtime digger so be sure your rocks are placed directly on the bottom glass to prevent a colapse.

Re: What kind of eel is this? (Solved - Engineer Goby)

Thanks again for all your advice! All the adopted fish are still doing great. You never know what to expect when they show up at your doorstep in a playmate cooler!

I also have a mandarin goby as part of the adoption and am learning that it may need a special diet of copepods. Any tips on care for a mandarin goby?

Regards,
Nathan
