Masked Rabbitfish

Hi all,
I'm new to this Forum and hope I'm in the right place.

I'm looking for anyone who knows about or had issues with Masked Rabbitfish. I recently purchased one from a LFS having been told they eat a variety of algae including Bryopsis, and a Red bubble algae containing a un-godly slime.
The fish hasn't touched the Bryopsis but has cleaned up several other algae. Unfortunately, it apparently also has a taste for Mushrooms as all of mine have disappeared.

Anyone else had similar experiences?
Any help would be great!!

Thanks,
Doug

Re: Masked Rabbitfish

Hello and welcome to Reef Sanctuary!

I've read that rabbitfish are not reef safe. Most reefers complain about them eating corals

Re: Masked Rabbitfish

Welcome aboard Doug.

I've got a Foxface Rabbitfish that's about 6" or 7" in my reef tank that hasn't messed with my corals but I guess each one could be different.

Re: Masked Rabbitfish

Yeah my bros fox does fine in a reef. But, if you want to keep a fish thats not reef safe ina reeftank (and mind you this might not always work) just keep gorgonians and leathers. My bro has recently taken out all his polyps and mushrooms so he could put in a humu humu triggerfish, and will soon be adding a stingray. As i said, this may not always work, but it proobably will in most cases, because i dont think fish can easily eat leather corals.

Re: Masked Rabbitfish

Welcome to RS!! I have a scribble face rabbitfish. Their habits are similar. Mine took a liking to a leather and finally killed it. I started keeping nori strips rubberbanded around a rock and he left other corals alone. As long as there is enough algae to eat they "should" leave corals alone. Each individual fish is different though but it's worth trying the nori.
