Chromis

I had 4 chromis in a 10 gallon QT tank with a blue dartfish. I'm pretty sure the chromis have been killing each other off, but I just wanted to make sure the dartfish isn't the one doing it. The dartfish is about 5" long. The chromis have been dying one at a time, usually at night. They all have their gill plate ripped off and the last one had it's gills completely eaten. Since it was just the gills being injured, the other chromis are the culprit right? There's only one left now.

Re: Chromis

We had some chromises and they would gang up on the smaller or weaker one and kill it off.

When they killed each other, would they attack the gills?

Re: Chromis

They'd attack anything they felt like. It depended on what the fish's weakness was...fins, gills, the actual body.

Re: Chromis

Mine just started to disappear one at a time. Never figured out why and they had plenty of places to go and hide.

Re: Chromis

Chromis will attack each other to take over territory. That is why you should only buy them in odd numbers.

Re: Chromis

Well I did order 3 and they sent me 4, but I think they would have killed each other regardless if there were an even or odd number. I guess I should have kept them in separate QT tanks.
