what does crushed liverock do in the back chambers of a nano???

people say they help reduce ammonia and nitrites better than liverock in the tank itself? is this true?

but what does it really do??

I would definitely not say it is better than the LR in the display. But I would say it is better than the sponges that usually come in the back of nanos. Either way you need to be sure to keep it clean since detrius has a habit of building up. Some people put a snail or two back there to keep things clean. As mentioned above, it is also a great place for pods to breed. Pods are a great natural food for most of our fishy friends.
