Need input - Helfrich's firefish

My LFS has had one for 3 weeks now - it is eating well and looks great. Any input from those of you who have one, or have had one would be appreciated. From what i have read this is a good reef fish. Needs peaceful community (which I have) Needs rubble - got it.
This is an expensive fish so... What are the books not telling me?
Is this a fairly easy fish to keep?

As stated - I have a 300 gallon DT with LOTS of LR, sand... I have a bicolor blenny, lawnmower blenny, 3 chromis and 5 pj cardinals and assorted snails and hermits..

Re: Need input - Helfrich's firefish

Tank in it's now final setup (went through 2 set ups starting last August - finshed with new tank and 100 pounds of new LR - which was added to 400 pounds of "old" live rock in January) so it's several months old. Has a 90 gallon refugium, 35 gallon fuge and a 35 gallon sump....

Fish is $89... (since I'm new at this I've been keeping to the basics - but this one's reaaaaaly pretty!!)

Great fish and great price and from the details you mentioned about your setup he should do very well, just remember these guys are jumpers so an enclosed canopy is a must.

#1 they cannot tolerate heat above 78 degrees easily
#2 they need peaceful companions
#3 they might scrap with other firefish
#4 they will jump out of tank if stressed
#5 they are gorgeous and worth every dime....
#6 mine does not fight with his fellow purple firefish and is eating well and
basically a joy of a fish to have....

My purple took a round out of him when I first got him..chewed up his tail..he hs since grown it all back and is 100% and they dont fight anymore.

hOPE the above helps.

Tim

p.s. HE LOVES MEATY FOODS (mysis) more then flake...but eats flake also.

Re: Need input - Helfrich's firefish

My 2 cents is they are easy to keep but not as hardy as a plain old fire fish. They don't tolerate marine ick at all so make sure you don't stress them out during transit home.

Check the LFS tanks real good for ick, and QT for a while

Re: Need input - Helfrich's firefish

$50 would be the cost directly from the distributor.
$I can see them selling for at least $150 bucks.

So $90 is pretty good for this species.

Re: Need input - Helfrich's firefish

Didn't buy him - yet - when I went back noticed that they had an Angel that looked to be rubbing himself on the walls of the tank - and we are going away for a 5 day weekend the end of the month. I figure if it's still there when we get back and the other fish at the store look good I might consider it again. The heat issue is a consideration, my tank can get to 80 during the day. Also the jumping, I am not prepared for that. So we shall see in a few weeks....
