Blue Jaw/throat trigger size??

Hey all!

I recently got a gorgeous male blue jaw trigger, he's about 4.5 inches. Could anyone else tell me how fast they grow? I would like to keep him but want to make sure he won't outgrow my system in a year.

I have him in a 3x3' tank right now and plan to move him to a 6x2.5' tank once its up.

Triggers can grow very fast the 3x3 he should last for about 6-8 months

Re: Blue Jaw/throat trigger size??

Any idea how long it would take for him to reach 7-8"? I never keep "too large" fish in my systems I think its very unkind to the fish.

Like my radiata lionfish is supposed to grow to 8". When I got him 1.5 years ago he was 3-3.5" now he is about 5-5.5" with fins. I'm going to put him in the 6' long tank as well and that should be enough space for a few more years.

I just don't want the trigger to grow to 7" within a year because that is too large for a 6' tank in my opinion.

Re: Blue Jaw/throat trigger size??

The bluejaws I have had in the past have been slow growers. I had one in a 110 gallon for over a year without him outgrowing the tank. They can be jumpers, my first one died that way. They are a great fish with much personality, a little on the shy side at times and they love shrimp. Here is a picture of the second one I had:

Re: Blue Jaw/throat trigger size??

Okay thats good to know, so the 150 I'm going to put him in should be fine for awhile. Yeah, he was shy for the first two weeks, but now he stays out all the time even when I shut the pumps off to take pictures. He'll probably start handfeeding soon. I told my husband when i first got him that I was going to sell him, but my plan was to keep him long enough that my husband would start to like him. hehe Yesterday my husband was like "You're so sneaky, you know I'm starting to like him" hehe They're so intelligent that its hard not to grow attached to them. ;] I'll try to get some pics for you guys soon.

Re: Blue Jaw/throat trigger size??

That is an amazing clam and the trigger is cute too. You are really going to enjoy him. Do you have a full tank shot?
