Domino Damsel and Diamond Goby conflict

My wife and I have a 55 gallon tank with a yellow tang, maroon clown, lawnmower blenny, diamond goby and a domino damsel. They all seem to get along except the domino keeps chasing the diamond goby back in his hole and won't let him stay out to clean the sand, which is what we bought him to do. We caught the domino and have him in a net in the tank. Our local fish store doesn't do in store credit, but I don't want him chasing the goby all the time. My wife doesn't really want to get rid of him, but I'm about to flush him because he won't leave the goby alone. Any suggestions?

Can you take him back to the store and jut give it to them? That is what I have done with a number of fish that turned out to be inappropriate.

Yeah, if you feel bad see if they will put him in one of their display tanks.

Re: Domino Damsel and Diamond Goby conflict

No, I'm content with simply flushing him down the toilet, she's the one that likes him. He's a rather big domino too. My father in law has one that is tiny compared to ours. He's always been slightly agressive, but with the addition of the goby, he's gone crazy. The goby has moved his home to a rock on the opposite side of the tank, but the domino goes over there to chase him too. I think one of them is going to have to go. The domino really doesn't have a function and is the cheaper of the two fish. We flushed a blue damsel about 5 months ago...why we got another damsel, I'm not quite sure. I just thought there might be another option.

Re: Domino Damsel and Diamond Goby conflict

its a damsel. there is nothing you can do other than letting it eventually kill the goby, or remove it.

i battled w/a 4 line for months.

so your current challenge is getting the thing out. good luck.

Re: Domino Damsel and Diamond Goby conflict

I've already caught it. The easiest way I've found to catch fish is to let the net sit in the tank for 4-5 days so the fish can get familiar with it. Move it in the tank so the movement doesn't startle them. Then after about 4-5 days, they usually aren't scared of it.

Anyway...

Please take it back.
There is no reason to flush it. It will only take a few minutes to put it in a container and take it to the LFS.

Re: Domino Damsel and Diamond Goby conflict

It is the fate of all damsels. They are a nice starter fish but get mean as they get big. You won't find one conscientious reefkeeper that will tell you it's fine to flush the fish. Zip lock bag and back to the LFS is the way to go. They will resell it to someone else who wants a hardy beginner fish.

If you get feelings like my wife does, the poor fish is a goner. When my wife gets a feeling, she's never wrong.
