Cleaner Wrasse vs. Neon Goby

These 2 fish have a pretty similar look - sleek, blue-striped, colorful. I'm considering getting one or the other, but i'm not sure which. Anyone have any pros/cons to either species to offer? My current tank is all small, peaceful species and there's a lot of soft coral in the reef.

I have never had a neon goby but I can say I enjoyed my cleaner wrasse.

Cleaner wrasses rarely live long in captivity. You will be much better of with the goby.

Re: Cleaner Wrasse vs. Neon Goby

That's a good thing to know! Thanks. I've read that the gobies will do well in groups whereas the wrasses should be kept singly... so that's probably good too.

Re: Cleaner Wrasse vs. Neon Goby

Please do not purchase a cleaner wrasse. They perform a critical role to ocean fishes and should remain in the ocean.

Get the neon gobies! I have a pair of them and they are adorable!! Neon gobies can be tank bred also so there is no need to remove them from the oceans.

Re: Cleaner Wrasse vs. Neon Goby

That's all excellent advice, thanks! My mind is certainly made up. I only considered the wrasse because a couple websites I'd found had suggested it as a nice reef safe option and they mentioned none of this.

they weren't even sites with fish for sale. it was just some random fish profiles.

Re: Cleaner Wrasse vs. Neon Goby

I have heard that it is illegal to collect cleaner wrasses in Hawaiian waters. That should tell you something. There are unscrupulous collectors and distributors and as long as there is a buyer, they will collect and sell them. This is one of those species that you should say "NO!" too and send the collectors a message that we are not going to buy them. Now if someone developes a successful breeding program, in captivity, that would be better than taking them from the ocean.

I know of one of our members that has cleaner wrasses and he has been successful, but he is an Advanced, European aquarist.

Re: Cleaner Wrasse vs. Neon Goby

The one in my home tank does. He comes right up to my fingers when feeding and "picks" at them. He's hilarious when he gets a whole Mysis shrimp in his mouth.. it's sticking out on both sides and he's a PIG I tell ya... just a pig!!

If you want personality then take a look at the Blue Spot jawfish!
