Care of Anthias

I have three different types of Anthias in my tank and have had no problems taking care of them. The three I have had for a while are Queen Tiger, Squas, and Bartlet's. I recently bought three Evansi's and I lost 2 of them because I could not coax them into eating. The one that survived started to eat everything right away. The other two never ate (just hid).

I have no large or agressive fish (anthias are probably the most aggressive in my tank). I do have territorial fish in a mated pair of Percula clowns and a mated pair of oragne spot sand sifting gobies. As far as I can tell (and I watch the tank a lot) the new Anthias never came near these fish or the other war around.

I believe it must have been the choice of diet. I tried baby brine shrimp, rotifers, brine shrimp mysis shrimp, squid and blood worms (really just for the gobies).

Water parameters have been and still are fine.

Any ideas or help??? I HATE LOSING FISH!!!

Re: Care of Anthias

All I have heard is they are hard to feed with not a GREAT survival rate at least initially. I do know many who keep them but almost all of them had a larger than average % of losses in the beginning.

Wish I could help more but I do wish you the BEST of luck

When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: Care of Anthias

Anthias can be very picky. If scared or sick they go into a starvation mode. Im sorry for your loss. They could have had an illness before you got them. If you get them at a pet store it is always a good idea to have them feed them so you can see them eating before you buy them.

Thanks. I made the mistake of asking if they were eating instead of watching them eat. My LFS is usually very honest about this. Live and learn.

Re: Care of Anthias

It happens. I have seen fish eat in the store only to starve in my tank. The last time this happened was my lion fish. I find it best not to name the fish

Re: Care of Anthias

The harder to keep anthias such as the evansi need peace. You should properly QT all anthias for a least a month.Proper deworming with PraziPro also.Wild caught fish can and do come in with flukes and internal parasites especially anthias. It took nearly a week in QT before I got my two evansi to eat.At first only newly hatch brine w/ selcon then I move them over to cyclops and mysis(freeze dried and frozen).Once I fatten them up,I treat them for worms.Several months later, they eat aggressively as all the other anthias in my tank and they eat just about anything too.

Good luck with them, those are one of my favorite anthias.
