feather dusters????in trouble?

hello, i have(had) 3 feather dusters. two of which released their "feather duster", also there seems to be what looks like a worm beside one. i know that the dusters are actually worms, so does this mean one died and came out??

Re: feather dusters????in trouble?

I had a feather duster that lost Its crown about 2 monthes back, after about 2 weeks It started to grow a new crown. So In this process my duster did not come out In the mean time. I just got a duster just yesterday and when I brought It home and got In the tank It must of not liked the location It was In and totally backed out of Its caseing and crawled to a spot behind the tank that I cant even get to It. From my understang feathers should be buried In the sand where just the tip/crown Is able to come out or placed between rocks where It has some safty to It from crabs and what not.

Re: feather dusters????in trouble?

Feather dusters drop their "feathers" for seemingly unknown specifics but it is sometimes due to stress and sometimes thought to be a reproductive means (just what I heard at LFS).

Yes they are known to abandon a casing and start a new one if something isn't just right. Give it time and odds are you will see it has secreted a new home in a few weeks.

If you touched it and it didn't move that's NOT a good sign. When mine came out of it's casing even disturbing the tank would aggitate it to move and show signs of life.

good luck.

Re: feather dusters????in trouble?

There is some information about dusters shedding their crown and abandoning their tube about half way down in this article.

Aquarium Invertebrates

Hope it helps! I agree with Allen. If it doesn't move when you touch it, that can't be a good sign.
