Fairy Wrasse ID

http://www.exoticfish.com/details.cfm?cat=0|1977|1992|0|0&id=43140&

I found a fish identical to this one at my LFS. In this link, they describe it as an ultimate Fairy Wrasse. When I do a search on Ultimate Fairy Wrasse, I only get this website. Is there another name for this specific fish? These guys have it priced at $299, but my LFS has it at $150. This fish looks awesome in person, but I wanted to get more information before buying it.

Pretty fish but too expensive for me. Sorry I don't know anything about keeping them. I would be wary of any fish that costs that much but is listed as easy to care for. If it is that easy then why is it so expensive.

Re: Fairy Wrasse ID

They are fairly easy to care for, no different than other fairy wrasses.
The reason it is expensive is related to collection than easy of care. The proper name I believe for the fish you linked is Cirrahilabrus rubrimarginatus. I am not familiar with that common name of Ultimate Fairy wrasse. I have to say other than basic care and basic morphology I don't know too much about Fairy or Flasher wrasses. They do change sex, with a dominant "supermale" and the intial phases being female that may or may not hvae the capability of turning into males.

Yes, it is also called the Ruby Wrasse, Pink-margin Wrasse, Red-margined Wrasse. One of the issues is the scientific name is often mispelled.

It is not Cirrahilabrus rubromarginatus but Cirrahilabrus rubrimarginatus. It is a farily new species, 1992

Re: Fairy Wrasse ID

I spent some time searching this last night, and there are 2 with similar names; C. rubrimarginatus, and C. rubromarginatus, although it appears rubromarginatus MAY be just a misspelling of the first...(Fishbase.org doesn't list rubromarginatus, which leads me to think that it is just a mis-spelling)
They look to be from Australian waters, which makes getting them here less likely, due in part to Australia's strict exporting laws. There are a few species from that area that we never see here at all, (most get snapped up by Japanese buyers who are willing to pay the outlandish prices) and they find new species all the time in that part of the world. (anyone else remember when the Bangaii cardinal was discovered?)
In all, most of the fairy wrasses are good reef tank inhabitants, lots of color, non-aggressive, "reef-safe", and good community fish.

Thanks for the information. When I saw this fish at the LFS, he caught my eye instantly. The colors on him are awesome!!! Thanks again.

Re: Fairy Wrasse ID

I believe the "rubromarginatus" is a FW fish.

I have a Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus and it isn't a common fish and the supermale commands a hefty price. When I bought mine at the time it appeared to be a female or a sub-male which are usually much cheaper but to my surprise it has become a full fledged male and his color is beautiful. I'm sure if I added a female or two the lighter colors would really come out.

These fish don't ship well particularly when adults and they are JUMPERS !
I have been fortunate enough to be home when mine jumped several feet out of the tank when my canopy was open, so if you have an open top I would pass on these fish.

Good advice for any of the wrasses. Especially the flashers and fairy wrasses.

BTW beautiful specimen Robert.
