Yeah, we didn't want to be close on the FOS...

The reasons we chose A500 was because we wanted something easy to weld, it was cheaper than square tubing, and it was cheaper than 60 wall.

I will never again complain about having to obtain a 3 FOS at work again.

Factor of Safety .. is the number of times beyond a strength something needs to be. For example, at work we use 300 lbs per person, and a FOS of 3, say you have a platform that must be able to hold 3 people, then you have to design & build it to support at least 300 * 3 * 3 = 2700 lbs.

looks great. I like the overkill (as they call it) on the strength of the stand. I always seem to over build something, but atleast we don't have to worry about something happening to it.

Oh welding, DYI, Engineering stuff, FOS, my kind of thread....
Nice job to the both of you.... Can't wait to see the final product. Never thought of using steel.
As far as the FOS of 24, Should never have to worry, the company I use to work for we built bucket trucks, the ones you see the power company using and those were built to a FOS of 5.

I built my stand square then to realize that the floor was further out then I thought.
I have to get under the house now and sure up the floor in the area. The bad thing is the joist run parallel with the front of the tank and it sits in between the two so when you walk by it rock the tank.

woow, that is a very nice job on the stand
i wanted to make mine out of steel but the wife wouldnt let me buy a welder and couldnt make it at work, so went with wood

one Q, have you thought about attaching it to the wall so your daughter wont be able to nock it over, the tanks are topheavy and i have noticed that when friends (w/kids) come over the chillens go right to the tank and try to pull themselves up to see, "nemo" just a thought

Thanks guys! TDevil...yes, we have considered attaching it to the wall. In fact, I think hubby has that all planned. I am going to have locks on all cabinets, so the kids (including hubby ) can't get into it. Even if my daughter knows better, her friends may not, and I don't want to find them tasting skimmate, playing in the sump, or worse. I will also have a stool near by, as there is no way I'm going to be able to work on the tank without one, so she will probably have her own stool to see what's going on inside.
