fidojoe- this coral does the best under MH lighting, but you could give it a shot.

blueoceandiver - The government did contact me....we are going to begin a study on the captive propagation of this coral. Fortunately, I have many frags, so we should be able to have the coral available for purchase in the very near future. The government is going to be submitting a business plan to Curtswearing for approval. After Curt approves the plan, we will be on our way. Who knew all of this would happen because of a great website!!

I have received a RFP from the Coral Reef Task Force but I have not finished my proposal yet.

However, I'm sure they are interested in saving this rare species based on prior conversations.

From the limited (at this point) conversations I've had with U.S. Government employees, I would say that you guys impress the daylights out of them for bringing up such important issues.

Well, I have to echo their feelings. You guys are awesome, amazing, and I'm glad I got the chance to know you.

However, they are concerned about reproduction. How long does it take for a yellow candy cane to reproduce and how do we know the frags will live?

Curt,

Very little is known at the present time, as far as the best environment for this species. We do know, however, that we need to keep exposure to predators at a minimum or the species will be wiped out entirely. An interesting observation is one in which an abundance of these corals seem to be available during the months of November and December. This is an important point, and will be looked at in depth during the study.

from what i have learned is that the mating is in warm climates, such as hawaii, jamaca,-usually near sugar fields- the zygote then travels to northern indutrialized areas by traveling the major shipping lanes where they undergo the transformation into sessile creatures. from these areas they are collected in mass quantities, sorted by variety and shipped world wide. it is amazing that they seem to near extinction every year, but due to heavy breeding habits, they always recover.

GASP!! Wit, I know you work with people on the inside, but how did you get this information???

They do seem to recover at a rapid pace. The breeding habits will be studied down to a microscopic level. I love spending time in the lab and peering through a microscope, therefore I am very excited about this project!

dont forget a contract its not like we cant trust the gov. to keep these beautiful species available.plus think of the royalties that would be missed .i had to rassel away the common red veriaty from my dog, not a great loss as it is the most common color of the canes.

blueoceandiver....that's terrible that your dog is after these as well!! The good thing is Curt will take care of the business side of it. I know he'll do what it takes to get it done right....after all, his prize would be to own one of these babies!!

In my observation these canes travel in packs of eight or 12 respectively and seem to form a straight line facing forward in some sort of mating formation with the act of copulation not actually being seen and presumably done at night.

The above predator mentioned in this thread seems to attack a whole group of these canes and leaves them in various stages of destruction and it is obvious that some will never recover.

So my conclusion is that these canes must hold a special attractiveness to it's predator whether it be color or taste. Hopefully in further studies, a solution can be found to save these beautiful canes.
