Unhappy We can't have nice things

Somebody's bots spammed up ReefPedia real good.

Until I can get it all cleaned up, you will have to create an account and log in to edit any pages on the Wiki. Now, off to hunt for new botsquashers....

Re: We can't have nice things

a bot is a software program designed to do a specific task.. some just scroll around trying to find security holes.. some do nothing more than try to register websites to drop messages and links for spam and some just multiply and spread spyware. The sad news is they get better and better at working around our defenses each and every day. It's a never ending battle and gets tougher each and every day.

When you register at a sight and it has a picture of letters and numbers that are hard to make out/read that's one way to TRY and defeat a bot from registering. But unfortunately they are getting around that many times.

Re: We can't have nice things

I read something about a study on wikipedia about the number of edits lowering the percentage of reliability, a university prof has a program for spotting nonsense imputs, is this just malicious stupidity or is there an actual purpose to spamming, sorry about the new job Travis, happy hunting. Steve

Re: We can't have nice things

Unfortunately spamming is a HUGE industry. If you sit back and look at the shear number of people that can be spammed at any given moment and realize that can be done automatically and realize it only takes a very small percentage of users to "fall" for it to make it proffitable. Just think of it like this... if you write a spam bot to simply go and drop a link in a forum like ours for fake/generic "ED" medicine. Some guy is one here looking late at night about reefing and just happens to see the link and think "This might be for me!" He clicks and orders one order of this bogus medicine. It was done totally FREE to the company with no input from anyone but the customer.

Spamming is HUGE business and so is spyware and adware. We have college kids over seas making HUGE amounts of money to sit at home and write these programs. They get paid by "hits". Suppose they get paid $.01 per hit. They write a spambot that sends 50,000 people to a site a day just hap-hazzardly. That kind just made $500 for that day. Now the company is only betting on a 4-9% order ratio. Let's say an average order is $30. If we use 4% (very low indeed) that company is making roughly $60,000. Now you see where this is BIG business. It's sad but true.

Yes I am a geek. I actually have a side business fighting these jerks and that side business goes a LONG way to pay for my hobbies.

There are penalties over HERE on THIS side of the pond but a lot of this is done in remote areas of the world and a LOT of this is so new to society that laws are slow to catch up.

Can you do it from home? That's up to your an your wife
