Re: Take another look

I was wondering if anyone new where some information on Reefpedia site standards were. I would assume that to preserve a uniform feel there is a style that is supposed to be applied universally across the whole site (Wikipedia does this, as do all newspapers and magazines.) I can't find any information about it.

Navagation through the site is a little tricky, as you can't search on groups. Categories and Articles could be consolidated and rearranged. (i.e. If a user does a search on xyz fish, it turns up no pages, but navigate to the category page that contains that fish and there is a lot of information.) It seems like there should be a uniform method to linking pages, redirects, and how category pages work.

Before I made any major changes, I wanted to discuss it with other Reefpedia members. I couldn't find any discussion pages where members where discussing edits. Any info would be great.

Re: Take another look

Hi Chris, I just replied to your email and thought I would post it here as well and share my feelings with all on the progress (or lack thereof) of ReefPedia.

I really do think that ReefPedia is a site before its time, and that as people become more accustomed to Wikis, it will take off. But for the most part, it has been a one man (me) show. I promoted it heavily at first and got some good contributions, but a Wiki is definitely a community and the community aspect hasn't really taken hold.

I appreciate how organized and well thought-out Wikipedia is, but it was also an evolution getting there. As I tried adding more instructions and standards, I realized I was just confusing things for people who are already either overwhelmed or intimidated by the Wiki nature of the site. So I purposely kept things simple, in hopes that those standards and structures would evolve with the site.

Also, while ReefPedia was something I had a good amount of time to promote at first, I got promoted at work and had to focus on the paying job. So my progress on promoting and developing the site has slowed to a crawl. Honestly, I think it needs some TLC but more than anything the idea of a reef aquarium wiki needs time.

As far as how things should look and feel, I made templates for fish, coral and invert pages for that reason as well as to simplify things for people. Rather than telling people how to do things (which again I think there may be already too much of), I thought I would try to do it for them.

I'm definitely not the world's best wiki admin, but I really do believe that as the hobby and the Internet evolve together, this place could be the next ReefCentral (only nicer I hope, LOL.)

I would L-O-V-E your help with this project in any way you'd be willing to contribute. I would be happy to upgrade you to admin status immediately.

By the way, sounds like our day jobs are yet another source of common ground. I'm a creative director at an interactive marketing agency.

Thanks again

Travis
