snail id please

Hei, I got this nice fellow some days ago, its most night-active, but yesterday he ventured out when lights were on.

His about 3-4 inches long and 1 inch wide.

Do any of you know it?

As seen on the second image, its eating alge from the frontglass...

Thanks in advance.
Jakob

You made me work real hard on this one.

I found it on page 125 of Coral Reef Animals of the Indo-Pacific by Gosliner, Behrens, and Williams. (Awesome book by the way).

It is an abalone. Haliotis Asinina

Thanks Nikki

That book says they are herbivores and when disturbed they will seek darker areas. They generally stay under corals during the day and live in intertidal zones.

Abalone's are great sauteed in a garlic butter sauce...
Oh... you mean in the tank.

I'm sure it'll be fine... they're herbivores, so unless you really want to keep all that hair algae, he should prove beneficial.

Great hitchhiker... I wish I could get something like that.

None whatsoever. In fact googling it's scientific name doesn't ever bring up anything related to reef tanks.

I would guess that I would see if it will eat nori prior to it running out of algae. This might be one critter that has to graduate to other's tanks after it eats all of the algae if it won't eat nori or other types of algae.
