| Neon dottyback | I picked up this Xenia from the LFS. They were selling it as Pulsing Xenia. But, it doesn't look like any pilsing Xenia I've ever seen! Anyone know what it is? It's flow requirements, feeding, etc.? They lay down alot if I put them in a calmer flow, but are still wide open. They rise a little more in a higher flow, but blow around. What's the happy medium for them??

| Plate Coral ![]() | I dunno, looks like some sort of daisy polyp to me, but that's just a guess. There are a bunch of different types of "pulsing xenia" out there. Just in case, though, here's a good articles with some identification stuff: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-0...ture/index.htm

| Smilie Bartender ![]() | That looks like Anthelia. Trust me, I know, because I have this #$%^ growing on every single rock in my tank. Doesn’t pulse, spreads very quickly, hard to kill, does not ship well. Are these traits good or bad? Mixed bag for me, hate the fact that it has taken over but I think I fed myself for about a month on mostly tank-raised anthelia frags I sold when I was between jobs. Great candidate for a prop tank. ![]()

| Neon dottyback | Well, I moved them somewhat out of the flow which looked too heavy for them and they laid down, but stayed wide open. I am at a loss to figure out which flow they'd be happiest in and if this laying down (which they were doing in the store tank for a week (I was checking on them every 2 days)) is not part of their normal behavior? Any ideas?

| Smilie Bartender ![]() | It’s normal. Any flow will do, really. The only way I can kill this stuff is to put it into a box and try to ship it. All my xenia died off due to PO4, this stuff was still literally growing on the tank walls. I’ll post a pic later to show you just how crazy this stuff is.

| Neon dottyback | Well, I think I finally found the happy medium for this Anthelia. I am sure that is what it is now! Thanks Travis! I have it in a moderate flow area and they are standing up a bit more often now. I guess they are just getting used to the tank. I must have a young one because this one is awful thin on stalks. They aren't nearly as wide as yours is in the pic. Neither on the polyps or the stalks. I guess that will come in time?

| Smilie Bartender ![]() | I noticed that. They seem like they need more light, which I’m sure you’ll be giving them. I have tried to kill mine by shading it and it looks like that, then disattaches and floats to another rock… LOL. Mine also tend to look like that when they’re stressed, but always come around within a week or two. I’m sure it will be fine, but you should leave it alone as much as possible to let it adjust to its new surroundings. I’ve had the stuff live under a single 1x36W PC in my nano tank, under 2x65W Pcs in my prop tank, and under 3x96W PC in my main tank. It grew/spread in every tank, but how fast it did so was directly related to the amount of light. I got it from a friend (???) who had it under 2x250W MH and 440 of VHO, it grew incredibly fast but had pretty much no stalk- it was polyps on a mat. If you want to see the stuff grow on glass, after it gets acclimated put the rock right next to one of the tank walls and wait a few weeks. If it has nowhere else to go, it will gladly attach to the glass. T

| Neon dottyback | Well, I have my 96w Coralife Quad coming next week (Monday or so.) So, they will definitely have enough light after then! I have two of the Mini PC 6500K bulbs on the tank now in the stock Wal-Mart hood that came with the kit. So, it's definitely a low lighting situation. So, in a week, they will have more light. I won't move them again. I'll leave them be.

| Totally back ![]() | My experience with "blue anthellia" is that it seems to get larger under heavier flow. It really does seem to be happy anywhere except right where the powerhead is blowing on it. In some areas it will grow thick and bushy, other areas it stays pretty thin and ugly looking. But it keeps growing regardless. Mike |
