Unhappy Hairy looking worm, what the heck!

I found this worm coming out of one of my live rocks one night. It was red with white hairs. It did not come fully out of the rock when I saw it. The next time I noticed it was right after I fed my sea star. The worm stole the fish I fed my sea star and drug it into the rock. I was able to get some pictures of it, but the picture I uploaded was way too big to put on here. That's why it is so fuzzy, because I had to crop it to get it under 50 jpeg. (Is there any way that I can upload a photo that is around 800 jpeg?) So, what is this worm? And should I get it out of my tank? If so, how?

I would say that's a bristleworm, and likely a good thing to have. However, let's wait and see what the real experts say!

Barb is right! That's a bristle worm. Harmless (unless cuddled) filter feeder/ditritus eater..... until they get really large - larger than a pencil.

I have many, many small ones in my reef.

Keep your fingers away from them! They'll give you a nasty owie for sure, and maybe an allergic reaction or make you sick, even.

Good for the tank, though!

And HEY I got one right!

I found one of those in my tank. I guess they are safe.

Re: Hairy looking worm, what the heck!

It looks like a bristle worm to me. I have big bristle worms in my tanks and have clams in with them. I have never seen a bristle worm harm any living thing in my tanks for the 14 + years that I have been in this hobbie.
