| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: wu dis Really? 4 or 5? Nice. Someone would probably need a much closer picture to be sure. Most of the time I've read they eat coralline algae. I had a pencil urchin in a 30g tank and he didn't even make a dent in the coralline. But I heard of some being coral eaters. Hope you got a good kind.

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: wu dis First, it is not a Atlantic long spined urchin. There are not enough spines or long enough. It is a juv Echinometra sp. Echinometra viridis They graze on algae and rarely coralline algae. They are noted for producing many algae free reef patches. Look to see if there are white rings at the base of the spines. Echinometra viridis - Google Image Search Echinometra lu****er This is a burrowing/rock-bore urchin and feed mostly at night. They usually bore into a calcareous substance and make a burrow to live in during the day. They will remove any coralline algae around there burrow but that is mostly it. They like to eat "drifting" or settled algae. So, they world like to stay in or near their burrow at all times. They are not roamers but may be in a reef tank They do not have the white ring. Echinometra lu****er - Google Image Search

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: wu dis It may also be juvenile, Arbacia punctulata, which it does look more like. Looks like an almsot exact match to me. These eat algae but also sponges, coral polys but are mostly algae grazers and feed at night. Often called Purple-spined Sea Urchin. ![]() ![]() ![]()

| Reef Sanctuary's Mr. Wizard ![]() | Re: wu dis Well, 1 & 2 are both the same species It is just the lighting they use for research at the Hardin Lab. #1 anatomically actually looks even closer. Color is not much of a "thing" in the real world of taxonomy.
