Aptasia? Feather duster? UFO? hehe

Here is something I found on a rock today. It was on the backside against another rock so I hadnt seen it before. I think it might be aptasia?? Thanks for your help!

It will suddenly close really fast. In this last pic you can see it inbetween the long white line and the green thingy in the hole all bunched up really tiny.

Not Aptasia. Looks like the standard feather duster to me. Got hundreds in my tank.

YEEEESSSSSS! Something good in my tank! I have been battleing algae for a while now so this + my mushrooms reproducing a few days ago is putting me in a better mood!

So does the tube section of the feather duster live in a hole in the rock? Or is this a different kind that doesnt have a tube but instead just grows right on the side of a rock?

It is the Bispira species of fan worm. It does have a tube inside the rock.

Re: Aptasia? Feather duster? UFO? hehe

So I am reading about the Bispira (spiraled feather duster) in my "Marine Invertibrates" book by Ronald Shimek and he says, "Unfortunatley, they are likely to starve in most reef tanks. Need target feeding in most tanks to survive." That doesnt sound too good since I haven't been target feeding it. I dont even have phytoplankton to feed it. Does that come in the same little cubes as marine one and mysis shrimp?

Re: Aptasia? Feather duster? UFO? hehe

ive got about 2 dozen of them and in my experience (which is limited admittedly) they dont need a damn thing to flourish :-) they are actually really cool to watch and they seem to grow and reproduce quickly

dj: I was wondering why so many people buy/have them in their tanks if they are that hard to keep. Its just one persons oppinion after all. I like how responsive they are to their surroundings. I stick my hand up under the light so it casts a show where the duster is and he sucks right back into his tube!

Often they show up in new tanks and then slowly disappear. At least that is my experience.

Lynn is dead on...they come and go, then come back again. The eat VERY micro foods, even DT's phyto is too large unless you blend the daylights out of it. An attatched fishless refugium with a clean up crew such as crabs is the best means to support them. The crabs create tiny planktonic foods in the foraging habits.

Oh thanks a lot, I was actually going to ask if the best place for them would be the refugium. I dont have one quite yet but its embeded in the rock anyway so that wouldnt work for me.
