Re: This came on on my new tri-color colony...

That is a smooth shelled crab and should be safe. Whether or not it's an acro crab I don't know because they come in different shapes, sizes and colors. It is my opinion that if they have a symbiotic relationship with corals then they can't be that bad to have in the tank and as with all symbiotic relationships can only benefit your coral. These crabs that host with corals do not stray from their host. They keep it clean and protect it from predators. In return the coral provides shelter and protection. It's a win-win situation!

I had a pair of "acro" crabs that came with a birdsnest. Unfortunately the coral died and I removed the crabs and put them back in the tank. About 8 weeks later I got a new birdsnest frag and I'll be damned but those crabs are now hosting with it.

Put it back in the tank!

Yes, that is a coral crab and something you want to keep with the coral that it came in on.

Would coral crabs be different from anemone crabs or are they the same? My invert book only talks about anemone crabs, thats why I am curious.

Easy Beelz, I didnt say kill it. I was simply implying that these guys may be hard to get out in the future, and w/o a 100% positive ID better to be safe than sorry.

You don't have to agree with my philosophy, but I like to decide and know EXACTLY what is in my tank so I can troubleshoot in the future. If I didn't pick it, I don't want it. Thankfully I have a fuge for these problems.

Re: This came on on my new tri-color colony...

I found one like that yesterday, except is was a bright red. I banished it to the sump because I didn't know what it was. I don't have any acros, but I may move him back into the display if he's safe. He's only been living in the tank for 16 months now, so I doubt he's harmful.

Yes they are different, but they are both commensal species meaning that they will stay "home" and not roam around the tank looking to see whats on the menu. In other words, they are both reef safe.
