Shrimpy looking stowaway

In the rock, that the toadstool leather I bought Scott today, is a hole that two beady eyes keep popping out of. The body from what I can see is a dirty clear color and Scott swears its a mantis and is freaking.

Any ideas without a pic right now?

Re: Shrimpy looking stowaway

I am hoping its only a pistol shrimp, but the darn thing will not come all the way out of his hide hole.

Re: Shrimpy looking stowaway

Try looking for it after lights out with a very small flashlight or a red light. Be careful around it if its a mantis they can be dangerous.

Re: Shrimpy looking stowaway

Take the rock out and pour a little bit of seltzer water into the hole. Do it over a bucket of SW as the shrimp will most likely come flying out of the hole.

Re: Shrimpy looking stowaway

If seltzer gets onto the toadstool, will it hurt it?

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Shrimpy looking stowaway

I bet it is a crab.
You would hear a mantis or pistol shrimp before you ever saw it.
They both make a similar popping noise. A Pistol shrimp is more likely to stay very well hidden.

Janetta check out my new pics of me teaching one of my mantis to shake hands.
They are in my 55g link in the golden chain. Last page. you can click on the link in my sig.
