They are asterina stars. Take them out or they will spread like mad.

Re: Star shaped creatures all over glass

I haven't ever removed any from my tank and haven't had any issues in 13 months now. Why would you remove them? I assumed they populate like Pods! As food and conditions favor they spread and the population will stabilize once they are equal to food source.

Am I missing something?

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Star shaped creatures all over glass

You are right on Al. I have dozens and they have never been a problem. Somebody (I think Bob) says they eat corraline and he was trying to get rid of them. My tank is so purple I would never notice.
However I am not convinced those are asterina stars. I agree by the title of the thread I was sure they were asterinas but looking at the pic, I am not so sure. Asterinas are more puffy and usually lopsided.
Cougra posted a great picture a while ago. This is an Asterina.

Re: Star shaped creatures all over glass

I'm thinking they may be micro brittles! I have so many in my tank now that it's almost funny to see how many I can pick out (of course I don't mean literally PICK OUT of the tank). When I trim back Chaeto I get literally DOZENS in a small hand full. I place my Chaeto over some egg-crate suspended over my FUGE and allow as many as possible to fall out (with pods) back into the Fuge.

Re: Star shaped creatures all over glass

The shape is more like the micro brittles but I haven't seen any of them in white and mine have even longer and skinnier legs. There are a number of different types though so you never know.

That definitely looks more like it. I think we have a winner. Sounds like they are just fine to have so no problem leaving them.

The reef store here told me to take them out that they can eat corals and they are a nuisance.

some asterina stars have been accused of eating corals, but generally the white/tan ones are completely safe and kinda fun to have around.

I have read the same thing over the years...and have not removed any either. I have never had any problem with them in my tank.

Re: Star shaped creatures all over glass

nothing to worry about - in fact, just like the pods, their population grew and has already backed down.

they are harmless
