Mystery snail

Well this snail just showed up one day. This is the first time he was somewhere I could get a pic. There is nothing new in the tank at all so he must have been hiding for a while.

Re: Mystery snail

Could be conch I suppose. I do have queen conchs in the tank but they look rather different. This guy has kind of stripes and very pronounced spikes. My conchs are one color and the spikes are less pronounced. It could be the difference in age I suppose.
Mostly I want to make sure it is a good guy.

Re: Mystery snail

gps unit? I looked for some snail ID sites but they are far and few between, you will need a good pic of the foot/mouth and a pleasant profile shot would be nice, I seem to recall most conch's are borers? and some really like oysters

Re: Mystery snail

It could be a Drupe. Look at this: Family Thaididae, Drupes
This is a fairly interesting site for ID's.

Re: Mystery snail

Murex Snail

it is definetely a predatory snail, driling a small hole into the shell of other snails to eat them :
also of interest is that they are the source of an expensive dye called Tyrian purple, which was favored by Roman emperors and aristocracy in a tradition harking back to the Phoenicians.

Re: Mystery snail

It was kind of funny. I saw Boomers ID so I did the google image search. All that came up on the first two pages was places where they were selling the shells. Definitely the right shell but only the shells. I can see why because it really is beautiful. Then I got out my reef invertebrates book and found out that they are definitely not good guys. That really is too bad cause I kind of liked it. Next time I see him I will remove him. I don't think he can do that much damage yet since he is very small but the sooner he goes the better.
Thanks everybody.

Hijack alert
Yes I am hijacking my own thread. LOL
I was reading this mornig about how sea cucumbers are used as food or medicine. Apparently the entire animal is used for something and it is highly prized.
