stomatella snail

There has been increasing numbers of what I believe to be stomatella snails. I know there harmless but if they get out of hand they will starve in my clean tank ( yeah, I said it ). Witch will lead to mass death then Dk. I just saw one expelling eggs. How will this impact my tank? They look like this:

Re: stomatella snail

the eggs will more than likely get eaten up, most anyway, even if they do make till they hatch. IME, i find that snails usually maitain a certain population level and maitian that level. if food is not present some die off, if there is lots of food there numbers increase.

Re: stomatella snail

I have stomatella snails in my system, and they multiply like rabbits. Lights out time, there are THOUSANDS of them. I have not seen much of a "balance".

Re: stomatella snail

I have them in my 10g tank too. I notice the numbers rise and fall just like my "Pod-pulation" does. When there's more food they grow and when "leaner" days come they vanish. It is a balance that's dynamic and changing all the time.

This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Here too.

Can I catch `em, freeze `em, then chop them in half and serve?

Re: stomatella snail

I've never heard anything negative about them. If they do starve they are not likely to die all at once. I think the system should be able to handle the few that will die that way. If there is not enough food they babies will go first and the numbers will be naturally reduced. I wouldn't worry about it. They are good little cleaners.

Re: stomatella snail

Yeah, I know. But can I freeze them and then feed them to the fish?
