Coral ID Needed :-)

OK I just put a piece on hold and told them I would be back with the camera and cash tomorrow
On the tank it was labeled as a Pink Disicopora. I’m fairly sure it is misspelled since I can’t get a single hit on google or yahoo. There was also a very nice looking blue one but another customer beat me to it
It looks kind of like a birds nest but it had fat branches and NO polyps. Very smooth branches.
I scanned quickly through my books with no luck.
Sorry no pic yet I’ll post one tomorrow if I can.
Anyone have an idea what this could be?
TIA
S

Thanks Kev
I'm not even sure it is a SPS.
It had no polyps, branches slightly thicker then a pencil, and very smooth appearance.
Branching like a birds nest but more rounded.
I was hoping someone would notice a blatant misspelling.
Oh well

Soon Luis soon

Distichopora. Pink, purple, etc. Similar to Stylaster, etc. Fire coral - very difficult to care for. Aka "Lace coral".

Take a peek at this Marine Center page:

Thanks Teri,
That may be it. I only got a quick look. I'll do my homework and post a pic before I take it home this weekend.

OK called the store and it looks like (from the sloppy writing on the invoice) it is Distichopora Violacea.
Here is a link that looks a lot like it.
I'm hesitant to get it though. I don't feed much vert food.
Anyone here keeping one?

The link...

And of course here

Pics soon

Yeah, stay away from Distichopora, No circulation system in these guys, and need plenty of plankton and nutrients.

Those new pieces are awesome, not sure what they are though.
It does look kind of like Millepora alcicornis. If it is, then watch out for the nematocysts which will sting you and any nearby corals.

I could be totally wrong too, I'm not good at this id stuff
Mike

EDIT: After taking a look at Borneman's book I guess they are Distichopora, they look just like the ones in the book.
Wonder what those little crevices are in the specimans' you have pictures of? The ones I'm looking at don't seem to have that.

I agree that they are beautiful and tempting.
As far as the crevices go I think in time they will sprout the feeding tentacles clearly seen here.
http://www.thepsas.org/photos_corals...t=521&p age=1
It’s all the new camera
Macro’s are clearly surprising with this thing. Well worth every penny.
Luis we have a new distributor so next time you are in NJ let me know and I will order one.
MPS I agree they are Distichopora. I bagged both today for customers and they did not sting at all. Also the links I posted IMO are just not as close up and clear.
One was in the ocean and the other clearly shows it feeding.
Of course I could be wrong it happens all the time

After opting out I now have my pic of 2 acros.
Both labeled “plate Acro”

Plate 1
