black growth id please,

I have this evil looking growth on a piece of LR. An ID would be appreciated. Now If I can just get the pic to show up! I admit to being pc challenged

It worked!

Not in the light like that. It might be cyano. hard to tell from the picture. Have you tried to blow it off?

Re: black growth id please,

Is it hard packed? Does it appear to be thick and have mass to it or just a thin "layer" tight against the rock?

Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Brian, I TOLD you not to collect rocks off-shore from that Nuk-u-ler plant!

I agree that it's most likely some form of sponge...

Re: black growth id please,

Thanks for the replies, This is a piece of kalini I purchased from an lfs years ago. The spot is about 2" in diameter & tight against the rock & has a smooth hard texture like coraline almost. I can scrape it but not scrub it off. It's very black with a lime green out line. I assume it was area was all green at one time & the black is growing over it. Oh Did I ever learn a lesson about collecting drybase. Most of this dry base looked like chia Pets for hair algae. I ended up removing about 100 lbs! I have about 175lbs in the tank now. Anyway I uncovered this black stuff while scrubbing off all the lr. I added a couple koralia # 4's scrubbed & vacuumed as much ha as I could.Been doing a lot of water changes & running phosban & carbon in the sump. Thanks again !

Not sure why you think sponges would not be out in the light. On the reefs there are just as many, if not more, sponges than corals growing out in the open. Sure, there are a great many cryptic species, but there are just as many that are not. As long as there is plenty of flow and food, sponges can and will grow anywhere.

Re: black growth id please,

Now I'm the one asking for an ID but I don't think its a sponge. Whatever it is, the black color doesn't look healthy to me. Prow I will research this peysonnelia & fungus you mentioned. I don't remember where the piece was but it wasn't in the light like it is now. Most likely was under a bunch of ha.I wonder how many hits I get by googleing marine fungus! LOL

I agree with you Chuck. It was the color that told me it's not. I have never seen a black sponge in direct light before. Sure sponges grow in the light also. Sorry for the misleading post.

Re: black growth id please,

I don't think so Frankie. I just took another close look &there is no sponge like structure to it. I can't indent it or scrape it off with my thumbnail. It feels like coralline. Very thin over the area with a smooth hard surface. Hey I appreciate everybody's help.

Re: black growth id please,

The black hole still lives!
Before

Now

You can see how it has slowly spread over "only "this one area of lime green coraline. It has the texture of coraline.
