Re: black growth id please,

It looks like you don't have anything living on that piece of rock besides coraline. Wouldn't it make more sense to just remove the entire piece. I know it's not cost effective, but I'm a bit paranoid that way about containment of evil species.

Re: black growth id please,

Now that I have much better lighting. I'd like to see if it will recede before I pull it.The rock is fairly small so removing it isn't a problem.

Re: black growth id please,

I say remove the rock out and scrub the hell out of that black stuff, which is most likely cynobacteria.

Also,

How's your water?
Do you have a good protien skimmer?
How often are you feeding?

Three main causes of cyno bacteria.

Good luck

You can see how it has slowly spread over "only "this one area of lime green coraline. It has the texture of coraline.
My guess would be it is somekind of algae that overtook your green coralline algae.
Since it isn't overtaking your purple coralline I'd just as soon leave it be and see what happens unless you really don't like how it looks...

Re: black growth id please,

This rock is destined to be a door stop now! After my last post. I chiseled off the black hole, swished it well in old sw & replaced it. That was the end of February. This is what it looks like now! The screw is where the original spot was.

There is some connection between the lime green coraline & the black stuff. I was surprised at how fast it spread & had to pull it for fear it would spread thruout the tank. I really hated to loose the lime coraline. Anyway just an update for those interested.

Re: black growth id please,

I would be very interested in what this actually is. I have a spot on one of my rocks too but it doesn't seem to be spreading as quickly as yours did.

Re: black growth id please,

Also I'm a little concerned. I notice that I don't see much purple coraline left on this rock.

Are you loosing the purple coraline in your tank?

Re: black growth id please,

when coralline is exposed to air, it starts to turn that mauvy color. I had a bunch on my powerheads and when I took them out to clean them, it all turned that color.

Re: black growth id please,

Very interresting. I have something similar on several pieces of LR in my tank but it doesn't seem to spread. I have been watching it closely to see if it gets any bigger but it is either not growing or is doing so very very slowly. Mine is a very hard layer on the rock so I don't think it is cyano or a sponge. I'll try to remember to take a pic tonight and post it.

Re: black growth id please,

Huh! I wonder if there's someplace you could send it to be analyzed? Since it sounds like a few other people might have it, it might be good to find out exactly what's going on.
