Question What is THIS??

Mike discovered this thing in his tank, the 5g. It's sticking to the glass and moving pretty fast, searching for food it looks like.

Any ideas??

It is a flat worm kath. As long as you don't get crap loads of them they are OK. As long as you don't touch them to make a that "thing" come out........................?

I had one of those in my 20. I sucked it out and threw it down the drain

From the above link. This quote is kind of ambigous. I guess you leave them if you don't have any soft coral and remove them if you do.

Re: What is THIS??

No corals. Actually, nothing at all in that tank, and we're pretty sure it's done cycling. There's coralline and various types of macro algae starting to grow, some green and some red. There's that guy in the pic and there's what looks like TONS of bristleworms.

Mike was thinking of getting a mantis shrimp to put in there (found a source of the green type that's smaller on liveaquaria.com). I'm thinking one of those wouldn't be bothered, but if he went with some sexy shrimp and a few zoos they'd be in trouble.

I'm seeing that peppermints eat the flatworms. Will one eat the bristleworms too?

Re: What is THIS??

Bristle worms aka fireworms are a species that a few reef fish will eat the green coris wrasse, sixline wrasse, menlaurus wrasse to name a few. Certain crabs ie the Arrow crab will eat them to however they will also take out small reef fish.

Re: What is THIS??

Boy Kathy, aren't you lucky? You got all kinds of stuff with your rock. Sure you didn't get a Mantis shrimp too. Maybe Mike won't have to buy one!

Re: What is THIS??

These flatworms are awesome critters to watch and they do not reach plague populations like some do. They eat copepods.

Here's a pic of one of mine. You can see a belly full of pods and a little one escaping to the left.
