Mystery snail "seeding" my tank...???

My wife just called me at work to let me know of something weird she observed in our new 4 week old AquaPod 24:

She found this small snail, very smooth, looks almost exactly like live rock, moving very slowly up a piece of live Tonga Branch, but at one point it turned and moved VERY fast, almost like it went into temporary “turbo mode”. It is a pale beige/grey in color. Anyway, she watched it go down to a stub near the bottom of the branch where it then lifted itself up and proceeded to, well, I don’t want to write exactly what it looked like, let’s just say that it looked like it was “inseminating” the water (that’s the nicest way I could put it!). Whatever came out of it dissipated in the current and didn’t have any solids in it. Was this eggs, or was it a male “fertilizing” the water?

Thanks
John

Re: Mystery snail "seeding" my tank...???

I've seen several "Critters" in my tank do this. It appeared to Me more like a smoky/milky liquid which I would think is GREAT for the filter feeders.

Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

I can't find what kind that is right now, but they are supposed to be great algae cleaners. And they do have a turbo mode. Fastest snails in the county. Any County. They look like a snail with half a clam shell on their back.

Re: Mystery snail "seeding" my tank...???

I just observed that exact creature in my aquapod 24 in a crevice on one of my live rocks. The rocks have only been in my tank four days. I was actually here trying to ID him lol.

It's a stomatella, or something like that...
Mine were doing that at my 3 year old's birthday party. They go to a high point on the rock and 'let loose'...often.

I found it and it was a stomatella varia. Looked to be reef safe.

Re: Mystery snail "seeding" my tank...???

I have one of those that came in on something I had bought and the guy saw it and just called it a Shell-less snail. I only see it once in awhile, sometimes it creeps up the glass othertimes I see it creeping along the rocks.

The doing it often part would explain a recurring cloud on the surface of the water.
