Hitch Hiker Snail

Anyone know what kind of snail this is and is it reef safe? Can't see it in this photo, but it has a long proboscis that comes out of the end that is out of focus. Like an elephant! Thanks!

Re: Hitch Hiker Snail

That type of photo angel doesn't allow for an ID. Might my Hitch Hiker pages be of help, if not, you can at least get an idea of what type of photos will be needed so that others can have a decent shot at identifying it for you.

Re: Hitch Hiker Snail

OMG, thanks Chuck! I'm sure now, after looking at your Hitch Hiker site, that it is a whelk and is not reef safe. I had my suspicions. I think this is why I've been losing so many snails. I hope I can find them again!

I agee with Chuck you can not really tell what that is with that pic. For one you need to see the opening.

And buy the way Chuck I have never said it but that is like one of the greatest HHID sites I have seen, use it all the time and post it.

Dent, before you torch the little guy, does it have the horn or antler or whatever they are called? It has the exact coloration as a conch I had.
Is the flesh dark pink almost red?

Re: Hitch Hiker Snail

As soon as I find it again, I will pull it out and look closer and get some "better" pictures. Last night, 2 of them were in plain site. Today, they are doing their dirty work in hiding!

Re: Hitch Hiker Snail

So far I have narrowed it down to the genus, Cantharus. That's a tenative, differential, diagnosis until I get a better look under its skirt...I'm mean shell.

Thanks! and it will hopefully only get better as I get back into doing some collecting again. Which is made possible by Eric Borneman sending me a regulator & dive computer set up! Now I can get down there and get into the realms of different "hitch hikers"...lol, Gonna be fun tomorrow, am the divemaster for a group of south korean tourists, a local resort called me up and asked if I would be so kind...lol, Free dive on a boat, babysit some divers, get paid, see some new reef...hmmmm, sounds like a deal to me!...lol

Re: Hitch Hiker Snail

I'm convinced now that this is a predatory snail. I saw it earlier today opening to opening with an Astrea snail. Now it has released it hold and the Astrea is laying there wounded and the shell is twitching. Here is a picture of it on the glass, you can see the wounded Astrea in the left, background.
