| Plate Coral | Freak Snail? I.D. please I've got a snail in my tank that's about the size of a gobstopper jaw breaker (best I could compare to) and seems to have these "clam" things on his shell. There are 4 mouths on his shell that open and close. They seem to open when the lights are on and they have some filtering material visible when their mouths are open (like feather dusters). I touched one with the tip of a zip-tie and it closed up and reopened a minute later. I'm not up to speed on all the types of snails out there but is this normal? Anyone know what type of snail this is and what's on his shell?Freak Snail.JPG

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: Freak Snail? I.D. please Hey fellow Sacra-tomatoan! Not sure what kind of snail that is, but they get all kinds of things growing on them. I have on with feather dusters on his side and another has a peanut worm attached. That look's like an oyster is attached to him. Too cool! Where did you get him? I want one.

| Tridacna maxima | Re: Freak Snail? I.D. please with the pointy shell i would have to guess its either a astraea or trochus. can you tell if the shell has dark bands on it? it kinda looks like it has them but the pics are to fuzzy to say for sure, if so its a trochus. the things on it could be a small muscle or scalop or like vdituri said a oyster. is there anyway you can get a clearier pic? |

| Plate Coral | Re: Freak Snail? I.D. please The snail came with a 24 gal cube and some other livestock I bought off a guy who sells frags out of his house. There's too much growth to see if it has any clear bands or dark rings for sure. I'd say it does have some. Most of it's shell is covered by the shells of the 3 creatures on him. It's pretty cool. So you guys think they're oysters, muscles, scalops, or something along those lines. Seems crazy to me. I'll try to get clearer pics of it but the site limits me to 49.9kb upload size for images so I end up croping modifying the pics to get them to fit. We'll see.

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Freak Snail? I.D. please You can upload a larger pic to your gallery and link to it in the post, or you can put large pics on a photo hosting site like photobucket and link to those here as well. Just some ideas to get a better pic.

| Plate Coral | Re: Freak Snail? I.D. please Thanks lcstorc for the tip on getting larger photos out here. This is my first attempt to link from my gallery, hope it works. If it does, this should be a bit clearer image as requested. Hope it helps in the identification process. http://www.reefsanctuary.com/photopo.../10377/cat/504

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Freak Snail? I.D. please Much better pic. To take it one step further you can click on the button towards the bottom that says copy to clipboard. Then paste the line into your post. This way the pics shows up in the thread even though it is in your gallery. Here is the pic for those snail experts to look at. I wish I was better at the ID thing.
