Just found Hitchiker Crab - Good or Bad

Ok after about a month of cycling my new live rock I just found this guy. Can you help me id it and tell me if it is good or bad (for those who don't think all crabs are bad). His body is about 5/8-3/4 inches wide.

Thx!

BAD!

Even though I'm not a full-fledged member of the "crabs are evil society," typically hairy=bad and that bad boy is definitely hairy.

Also, look at the claws- I do believe that thing is a killing machine. Possibly a stone crab of some sort?

I say flush that bugger.

Re: Just found Hitchiker Crab - Good or Bad

Remember that cute iddy-biddy crab that I tried to id but couldn't get a photo of, I think this is him all grown up. The little one went in my tank, hope he was eaten alive by my wrasse who inspects all cleaning crew and decides who stays and who goes.

And then, I also found a Mantis today in my sump (after a month)! I've heard popping noises for a while, but I swore I checked that rock over and over and over before it went in. Glad it is in the sump. Still need to figure a way to get him out of there.

Why not leave him in the sump? I wouldn't think it would hurt anything there.

Yeah, the mantis would probably eat it.

Two for one special. Sorry Lynn, he is gone! I have never done that to a crab before.

Boy that Mantis is smart.

Re: Just found Hitchiker Crab - Good or Bad

VERY BAD! Get rid of it! It is a Gorilla crab, very common on TBS rock. It's the same crab that I suspect chewed into my BTA. Not only that, they dig and dig and dig. I have several of them, and I catch them when I can. BTW, how did you catch it?

Re: Just found Hitchiker Crab - Good or Bad

Well I took a small piece of my live rock out of the tub it was cycling in so I could smell it and decide if I could put it in my tank yet and a creeping crawly spider was on it. Dropped it like a hot potato! So, then it was on the floor. Once I could tell it was a crab, I picked it up and stuck it in a bowl.

Mantis is still in the sump. Him smarter than me, I thinks! (He thinks so too.) Suggestions...

Re: Just found Hitchiker Crab - Good or Bad

Well, at least the Mantis is in the sump. If it's in a piece of rock, remove the rock and suspend or hold over a bucket. Pour seltzer water over the rock and it will drop out into the bucket. If you want to keep it alive, then have a bowl of saltwater ready to put it in straight away. Take it to the LFS. This is how I removed two of them. The rock was no worse for the wear.
