Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

That looks like grape calurpa. Just another fast growing calurpa. If you want it and like it it is completely fine!

Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

It grows at the same speed as a feather calurpa would or possibly faster. Any calurpa grows very fast! Yeah most calurpa has visible growth over night.

Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

most of my LR came with these caulerpa on them. ive trimmed down the ones i dont want growin, and will probaby be working on trimming these soon too.

i keep my display tank lights on from about 8am to 9pm. the opposite time i turn on my fuge/sump. in my sump is a piece of LR with the feather looking caulerpa. i will be adding some chaeto soon. if i pack my sump with all these plants is that a problem? at the rate these grow its gonna be a jungle soon lol

actually you never see that in saltwater... maybe i should turn my display tank into a kelp bed lol

Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

The alien looking one is grape caulerpa, I had a bunch of it with my live rock. Not only will it take over your sump, it will also take over your main display, easily over growing and smothering coral. Be careful not to trim or harvest too much at once, because it's reported to release harmful chemicals and can turn the water a different color. Also, it can go sexual, releasing spores into the water column, also potentially causing problems. These are just things I have read. I Know the details are lacking, so perhaps someone else will chime in. Just some things to think of.

If you want to get rid of it, get yourself a Foxface Rabbitfish. My tank was full of it and he ate every last stem. My tank is now completely devoid of Caulerpa.

Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

i googled grape caulerpa and all of the pics and info have the 'leaves' as spheres (like grapes). none of mine are round. theyre flat on top... you guys sure this is the same stuff?

oh and i intend to start trimming it because it is overgrowin my cup corals.

Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

It's commonly called suction cup caulerpa. Caulerpa racemosa peltata is it's proper name. Very fast grower and will go sexual if not trimmed often.

Re: ID my hitchiker plants!

AHA THATS IT! well i trimmed about 80% of the caulerpa and placed it in the fuge. i also took the time to do a wee bit of rock moving. hope there are no adverse affects from any of this...
