| Elegance coral | An explosion of live rock! (tons of pics, be careful!) as i mentioned i have been taking pics of all my live rock that arrived today. Attached are pics of the things of interest on this rock. Please help me identify them! ive numbered them for easy reference for IDs. ![]() 1) some tiny yellow... cup things. they cover an entire rock. ![]() 2) yellow sponge? ![]() 3) a tiny serpent star. one of about 5 we found in the silty mud stuff at teh bottom of the shipping bags. moral of the story: save the mud and sift through it slowly! ![]() 4) a rock anemone? this was brought over from a tank at the local zoo. it was mixed in with some live crushed coral i added to cycle the tank. its actually incredibly small. ![]() 5) these red things look like the yellow things... except red. there are about 7 or 8 of them. ![]() 6) a red sponge? ![]() 7) another red sponge? ![]() 8) purple sponge? ![]() 9) this little monster has been poking his legs out of this hole. i cant see what it is. the legs look almost exactly like tarantula legs. theyre really hairy. gorilla crab? ![]() 10) my favorite part!!! i THINK theyre some kinda of SPS coral? or am i completely wrong? ![]() 11) more of the same, but in another location. this one is also withdrawn. ![]() 12) clam ![]() 13) blue sponge ![]() 14) what kind of anenome is this!? its pretty large, about 3 inches whe partially opened. welp, thats it... have at it!

| Over Achiever | Re: An explosion of live rock! (tons of pics, be careful!) Here's my ID list: 1. Yellow Tunicate 2. Sponge-Yellow Ball 3. Brittle Star-May be preditory when it grows up? 4. Aiptasia? 5. Orange Tunicate 6. Red encrusting sponge 7. I had one of these, it wasted away. Probably couldn't supply food. 8. Purple sponge. Most died, however there are two that are still alive 9. Gorilla crab-Get rid of it! 10. Cup Coral 11. Retracted Cup Coral 12. Clam. I have 2, they are beautiful and doing well. 13. Blue sponge. Probably wont make it. 14. Rock Anemone? I had a small one. It was beautiful. I think it got eaten by a mantis shrimp or gorilla crab. BTW-Great photos! You've seen nothing yet. Now just sit back and watch. Over the next few days and weeks, you will see much, much more. |

| Plate Coral | Re: An explosion of live rock! (tons of pics, be careful!) I agree with Dentoid's list, except 14. It is an Aiptasia species, not one of the really prolific species that is prone to taking over, but an Aiptasia just the same (a pretty one though).

| Scopas Tang ![]() | Re: An explosion of live rock! (tons of pics, be careful!) Your Rock Rocks! I vote that 14 is truly a rock anemone. Looks like mine, except that mine is beaded. I suppose it could be majano. The size makes me think rock anemone too.

| Plate Coral | Re: An explosion of live rock! (tons of pics, be careful!) You folks do realize that rock anemone is one of the common names for some Aiptasia species don't you? That and about a dozen other species and genera of anemone. In reef circles, Epicystis crucifer is probably what is most commonly being referenced by rock anemone.

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: An explosion of live rock! (tons of pics, be careful!) Wow! Now that is some live rock. If it is anything like the last few fieces I bought (at an lfs) you will keep seeing things appear for months. Mostly good things but a couple of bad guys. Sounds like most of yours fall into the good guy category. I'll have to remember the site whenever I get my upgrade and need to buy more LR.
