Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Well now I get to put all into practice I have learned at RS! I am only going to be taking care of 3 tanks now!

I have wanted to for some time get into a larger tank and this 55 gallon fell into my lap. A friend of mine was remodling and wanted to downsize his freshwater tank. I traded a 29 and hood for it.

I will be working on this in the winter and have to start from scratch. Plumbing will be frist thing of order. I will most likely have to drill some additional holes.

Intial Plans:

I am going for a reef tank with some higher light requirement corals, clams, fish. I am also going with a different look. I am going with a black sand which will be an interesting contrast.

2 X 250 watt MH + actinic pcs + moon lights, Remora skimmer, overflow, 2 PHs

I am going to build my canopy or I may buy one if I can get a good deal.

What I have so far:

55 gallon acrylic tank
Stand - (I am going to paint it)
15 gallon tank I am going to use for a sump (refugium)

I will keep you all posted and of course I always welcome your comments and suggestions!

Couple of pics for all of you too!

Cheers!

Sounds like fun! Do you have a plan to deal with all the heat from that lighting?

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

I would like some opinions on plumbing this tank. I have attached a rough sketch on what I may do.

I was thinking of drilling a hole in the middle top of the tank for the intake. You can see it in the picture.

For the return: I was thinking of getting a custom piece of acrylic cut to make an overflow. If you look at my picture, would it be best to place it in the middle or in the corner? I would also be drilling a hole there too.

Would I need an additonal overflow with this configuration?

Thanks everyone...

Cheers!

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Sorry for the confusion witty. I should have drawn them as holes and not like teeth....Does that make sense?

Cheers!

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Yes, that makes sense! I don't know if it makes any difference where you put the overflow but, if it were me, I would probably put it somewhere between the middle and corner. That's just me though!
