Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Reduced photo period only, I already had the fans but I started turning them on 30 minutes before the lights came on and left them running until midnight. The photo period went from this: VHO's on at 9am, MH on at 9:30am, MH off at 8:30am, VHO's off at 9pm

to this: VHO's on at 2pm, MH on at 3pm, MH off at 9pm, VHO's off at 10pm

I work night shift, so I like the time change better (more viewing time for me). The biggest difference I think was reducing the MH time from 11 hours to only 6 hours and not turning them on at all until most of the hottest part of the day was gone. My leather seemed to appreciate the shorter MH period the most. I think the MH's are a little overkill for my system anyway. I have mostly softies.

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Rodger unless your planning to upgrade your tank size in the near future I would definitely reconsider using 250's, you don't need them. You also have to be very careful with heat and acrylic tank failure especially along the top panel. Are you going to use a canopy or a hood ?

Yes Craig I did finish sealing the tank. I have to let it set for 48 hours and then check for leaks.

Robert: I was going to go with a canopy. Thanks for the advice!

Cheers!

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Updates!

Well plumbing is nearing completion. Still checking for leaks on the overflow box. I have it pretty to close to the way I want it. Just have to tweak the tubing a bit and then start sealing the pvc. Skimmer (aqua-C remora) and mag 7 pump are new.

Lighing is the next project. Any advice is always appreciated.

Cheers!

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

More progress....having some time off.. has allowed me to throw together a canopy. I just used pine and was very easy to make. I have to stain it, add the hinges, mount the lights and cut some holes for fans!

Getting there!

Cheers!

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

More Canopy updates!

Well I have the hinges and top on it now! I know the stain looks dark but it matches my stand fairly closely. I going to paint the inside white and I will be done. This was a really easy canopy to make and I would be happy to share how I did it.

Cheers!

Re: Rougie's 55 Ratiocinative Reef II

Nice work Rodger, white inside adds greatly to the reflection needed for good light penetration through the water column!
