| Ichthy Inquisitor | Hello to all again! I have been very impressed with the help and information that is available on this site. I have decided to use this as my schools "offical" tank page for information and as a place to chronicle it. Can I do such a thing? I have sent my students here to do research on salt water fish tanks. Everyone is terrific here! I have learned a tremendous amount. I will be posting pictures with the progress of our tank. Any help is always appreciated. I purchesed this tank with a air pollution grant that I applied for last year. Here are the specs I know off the top of my head: 200 gallons 200 lbs of live rock live sand mixed with play sand from home depot 2 x 96w lights (10,000K + actinic and daylight bulb that I cannot find out what type of bulb it is.) We are looking into uping these lights and adding halides. Not near enough, I know! I will post the skimmer and plumbing setup specs in the next few days. We are cycling the tank right now. Thanks everyone and I cannot wait to see how this progresses through time. Cheers!

| Ichthy Inquisitor | Thanks Witfull, Forestal! Mkpaulson: I teach 9 to 12. I teach biology and microbiology, so I can have students studying all aspects of the tank. This will probably not take place fully till next year. We have had the tank since late Jan. but have had a number of problems on the setup. My students along with myself have been DIY. Cheers! Pictures will be coming regularly.

| Ichthy Inquisitor | I wanted an opinion on Bio-balls. I will post a photo of our set-up. 2 members have suggested I remove them due to nitrate build-up. I trust thier judgement. Any suggestions on what to replace them with? Cheers!

| Fuzzy Sticks ![]() | I agree on removing the bio-balls. Once you have some pictures of the filter your useing i'll be better able to give you advice on what you can turn it into. Maybe you can turn it into a refugium? |

| Pistol Shrimp ![]() | I agree too! but, i think i might have been one of those OG's.... :-) On an established system, your supposed to take them out slowly, not all at once, but on a cycling system, you whould be just fine....you'll get a nitrate spike....but you'll expect it.. I use two HOB filters on my tank strictly for circulation - they are filled with LR rubble.....the more LR , the better.. j |

| Scopas Tang | I second basically everything JCoop just said, your not suppose to take out all the bio-balls at once, it causes a crash, but that isnt a problem for you now, so you can just do it all at once. And as far as the replacement, more LR is a good thing to have there, refugium is controversial *have to clean the caulerpa trimmings for it to be effective* |

| Ichthy Inquisitor | Thanks FFrankie, J and Jiddy for your advice. All of my levels are zero right now except the nitrates. Could these balls be keeping the levels up? Please take a look at my photos and see if there are other suggestions you can make. I will answer as best as I can. Cheers, Rougie

| Rabid Wolverine Reefer ![]() | i would remove the bio-balls and either use the area for carbon/phophate material or live rock. an dedicated area of flow for chemical filtration is a good thing.
