ohhhh... you could give the science students a 'live' bioball and let them look at all the critters on it under a microscope! Just scrape off a bit of life... that'd be fun

Exactly what I was thinking Woodstock! I teach a micro class so that idea goes perfect with them.

How much live rock would be good to in place of the bio balls?

Cheers!

lol. good call woodstock I agree with witfull, you need carbon in there. that filter is set up for it in the area where the water comes out next to the bioball chamber. You could replace the balls with live rock like wit said also. I see your in good hands here I dont see where you could change it into a refugium so if you intend on keeping that filter id stick to just mechanical filtration. I myself have very little mechanical filtration and use a more natural method. Here's a pic for you. Its a mud system i made. I grow carlarpa and am trying to grow mangroves in it also. i have a few pieces of live rock in there, some crabs and snails and a ton of other critters too. the mud is suspended to keep the gas pockets from forming letting the water filter up through the mud. I too had trouble with nitrates in the beginning but it seems to have gone down and al the levels have become normal over a corse of a few days and are holding well now. Just keep up on the water changes till you see the nitrates come down. and ditch the balls!

Tank photo for today. I have had a lot of bubbling in the tank as you can see the last few days. Any suggestions to eliminate it? Started on Tuesday.

Cheers,
Rougie

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

I would have to agree the sump looks low, in the pic in post 13 the water level Should Be above the white eggcrate and it looks like it's about halfway down the height of the eggcrate.

Thanks MK, Witfull, TDEVIL, FFrankie for your ideas. I think you are all right in your assessment. I will try that tomorrow.

Update: I did take out the bio-balls today and will be adding live rock to it.

Just a point of interest for everyone. This project is not just involving me but our physics, chemistry, and life science students. The more involved the better. I wrote the grant for this purpose. We live in a desert and this really allows many of our students to get a look at an ecosystem very unknown to them. It is the world's largest ecosystem, so why not expose them to it!

cheers!

Everyone was correct (Witfull, MK, TDEVIL, FFrankie)! Sump was low. Looks great now! Actually one of my students made the same suggestion yesterday. I am placing some of our cleaner crews in the tank today. I will keep you posted on how they are doing.

Cheers!

J: Acutally this student's mother does have a freshwater tank.

The cleaner crews are in:

13 turbos
14 reef hermits
3 narssarius snails.

The tank is doing ok. They are all still "kicking". Tomorrow will be the tell tale. I am on the way!

Cheers!

So - tanks set up, first life is put in, and a 3 day weekend. I think its time for a poll - How many times will you come in on the weekend to check up on your Cleaning crew?

i say at least twice.

:-)
