I think the distance from MH to water should be around 6" (mine are 4"). You loose a lot of energy the further away the lights are. Here is a diagram that I got from Spectral Analysis of Metal Halide Lamps . It discusses 400 watt lamps but you still get the idea of PPFD lost as the distance increases:

Thanks Woody! Excellent information there. Have they done a followup on the 250 watt bulbs?

Also is there any information on various corals and their PAR requirements? - If there is please post it. This would be the key in my opinion. Not only does one need to be aware of what the blub is doing, but are they meeting the photosynthetic requirements of your tanks inhabitants?

Awsome Woody! Perfect! I will get some of those and check them out.

Okay more opinions on these lights! I have attached a picture of the reflectors.

Questions: Is the wood big enough? Is there enough space inbetween the refectors and is it okay to orient them this way?

I can use a bigger piece of wood. I will also be putting a canopy around the whole piece to cut down the glare. I can also put glass on the reflectors to protect them. I also have fans too!

Comments or suggestions welcome!

are you going for one side brighter than the other or will 2 more be added to the other side?...trying to get the big picure to help with the lighting layout.

One side brighter than the other side. We are going to move the power compacts over to the other side which will have 2 x96 watt set ups. The MH's will be 2 250w on one side. I hope that makes sense.

ok,,then i would turn the light that is towards the middle of the tank around. this ill help blend the halide/PC transition.

Updates!

Well I finally took the bull by the horns and I have got our MH set-up going! Just made a light box for them that will hang over the left hand side of the tank. Still need to paint, attach reflectors and attach hooks to the box. Should be up and running in the next few days!

Looks great ! Are you going to install some fans in the canopy or use some clip on fans above the tank ?

My fans blow in the same direction and I have an open back to vent additiobnal heat as well. HTH

Not quite sure yet Robert. I have some 3" fans I can put in there. This will be suspended over the tank. Thanks for the idea on the clip on fans...that may be much easier!

since its going to be suspended, i would weigh astetics vs. ease. also, the box could be bigger, how close are the lights to each other,,,look pretty close. just a thought.

Thanks Witty. I have not mounted the reflectors yet. I could put a partition in between them? What do you think?
