I'm interested how you got a grant for a fish tank and air pollution?Very nice set up will follow progress. What kind of MH?DE or SE? Now you have a learning experience.

Sharkbait:

The grant is available every year in the spring and is funded by money from fines on companies who make air pollution violations (from I am told). I wrote the grant to study the affects of air pollution on the marine environment, but it has been more now to do with setting the tank up correctly. I am changing the focus until the tank is stable, so it may be just a marine ecosystem study at this point.

The MHs are SE.

Thanks!

Updates

Master Craig...ask and you shall receive! Only one pic today (left side with palythoas and new moon polyps - top right). More coming this week.

We did add some new livestock - peppermint shrimp, moon polyps, 3 mushrooms (green), and a Kenya tree coral. All appear to be doing well.

Hopefully the lights will be up this week!

I would like an opinion on this canopy. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Just an idea how to mount our 2 -250w MH. I hope the drawing is clear!

Thanks!

Where will the ballast(s) go? I would also consider a flang or overhang of some type to reduce eye glare from the MH.

Woodstock:

Good questions and I hope I have anwers.

Ballasts are going to the left of the drawing below on the floor. I am not putting them under the tank to allow them room to "breath" and I also have room over there.

If you look on the drawing the playwood or whatever I use is an overhang for glare reduction which will go all the way around (next to the tank in my picture). I hope that makes sense.

Thanks!

i have an idea for you Rodger,,,,but it would require cross dept cooperation. go to the woodshop class teacher and have them build a canopy for you.it can be a simple box like the one i got are a more elaborate full canopy with a piano hinge front.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Great Idea Witty! Only problem is we do not have a woodshop class at my school anymore. We only offer a metals class. Unless we are offering it this year.

Thanks!

Metal would work, you can set it up as a heatsink, but it may be a bit heavy. Just think though, you couldh ave hot lunches each day and wouldn't need to fight for the staff microwave

Generally I think your plan is good. Here are a few of my thoughts -

Supporting the fixture from chains is a good idea. However, you do not need to be as elabotate as you show in the diagram. You only need to use a single chain on each end. Mount the chain halfway between the front and back. You may find that you will need to add a little weight to the front or back of the fixture to get it parallel to the tank frame.

Generally I prefer MH lighting 12 to 18 inches from the tank. This is easily adjusted via the chains.

I would recommend placeing glass or plastic over the the MH bulbs. Make sure it's far enough way so it will not get damaged by the heat. This feature protects the bulb. You don't want a splash from the tank breaking an $80 bulb. It also offers some protection from people accidently touching the bulbs, and some additional UV protection to the livestock in the tank.

I would also recommend installing one or two fans for ventilation. This will keep the temp of the fixture lower. For best airflow, be sure to have some way for the air to escape. The easy way to do this is by cutting additional holes the same size as the fan, and putting a screen over them.

You may wish to make the fixture higher than your diagram shows. By making the fixture 8 or 10 inches "thick", you provide a valence to block seeing the light when viewing the tank. This will provide better viewing. Since this is just a view block, it can be made out of light weight material. Since this is a school project, you might even want to make the fixture something like 15 to 18 nches "thick" and mount it just above the tank. This way the lights are still 12 inches from the tank, but the fixture keeps ass sorts of stuff out of the tank.

The front to back depth of the fixture need not be the same as the tank, but do leave some room, in case you wish to mount Actinic VHOs or PCs in the future.
