Great information Craig, and exactly what I was looking to find out. It is a beautiful clam, but if you recommend to hold off I will take your advice.

I would not want to kill something so beautiful just because of an impulse buy, I want everything that I put into my tank to thrive. Plus, it is doing well where it is now, and I get to see it, and take care of it everyday anyway. We have been feeding it cyclopeeze, and brine shrimp. When we received it, it was actually only about 2", so he/she's grown in the short time its been with us.

I'll let it be,

Thanks again Craig.

I agree with Craig on the Tridacna Clams. If you want to read some great info on Anthias from Robert Fenner here's a link:

Great link Cheeks, thanks!

Anthia-wise I decided to go with Lyretail because from many books that I've read, they are supposed to be the most hardy of the anthias.

I'm not trying to discourage you from your choice...but....Bartletts Anthias are pretty hardy... and beautiful! Vibrant Yellow with hot pink on the sides and a purple streak on the bridge of the snout up to the first dorsal spike.

I have a pair, they are very frisky.... they dance all day.

I agree Kim the Bartletts have great color. I know that the article mentioned this but just to emphasize Anthias need to eat frequently it doesn't have to be alot of quantity but al least a couple of times a day they're a very active fish and use up alot of energy.

I've had 2 different Anthias never kept a school and they slowly withered away because I didn't feed frequently, one sign that they're on the decline is they slowly become inactive and withdrawn.

IMO, if you feed cyclopeeze between your regular feedings they do great. And the rest of your fish and corals will benifit too. When I started with it, I was amazed at the increase intensity in the colors of all my fish. I noticed the difference in about 2 weeks or so.

Thanks for the Anthia info everyone, and Kim your Bartletts are BEAUTIFUL! To tell you the truth my top three choices of anthias were:
1. Lyretail (Beautiful females, and fairly inexpensive)
2. Dispar (Very vibrant colors, and also fairly inexpensive)
3. Barletts (Beautiful coloration, but if I choose these I would minimize the group size.)

I do love the looks of Bartletts anthias also but they are a little more spendy, and I want a good sized group of them. But I guess anything is a possibility.lol.

Feeding the anthias shouldn't be a problem, I feed my tank three times a day right now.
Morning- Brine shrimp
Mid-day- Marine Flake
Night- Cyclopeeze

JKreef,

It would be interesting to see what your nitrate and phospghate levels are with that feeding schedule, which is fairly heavy depending on the size of the portions you feed. Are you experiencing any algea issues?

I feed once daily with mysis shrimp and supplement cyclopeze every two or three days. Brine shrimp are low in nutritional value compared to mysis, which is why I use a vitamin fortified mysis vs brine.

Good luck with your Bartlet selection, they are beautiful fish. Too lazy to go back through the thread, what other livestock do you have?

Craig,

No algae issues, except for my coraline that is starting to spread . As of now I only have two Amphiprion perculas in my tank, and I have very light feedings. I use approximately 1/4 of a cube of brine shrimp, and midday just a very small pinch of flake, and at night just dip the cyclopeeze in for about 2 seconds. I feed what I do because it's what the clowns eat in about 1 minute.

pH:8.1
Nitrite:0.0
Nitrate:5
phosphate:0
Ammonia: 0.0

I do a 10 gal water change every friday.

Haven't chosen any particular species of anthias yet, but it is between the three that I listed.

Something has been bothering me lately, I've decided that in the long run I want to, like many others out there, commit to a SPS dominated tank. My problem is that I've never kept SPS corals, all I know is from what I've read in several books and online, but I have never read when it is alright to introduce them into a tank. Would it be safe to introduce SPS in to a tank such as mine and the current time, or is there a certain time frame such as keeping clams that I would want to wait for.

I would love to start stocking more coral into my tank to slowly and surely build my colonies, and the only thing I know for a fact that I can keep are beginner corals such as zoos. I don't know if it's a stupid question but, would I be alright to start adding SPS frags after I get my lighting in a couple of days, and get my skimmer up and running?

Any advice or info would be great. Thanks.

Do you test for ca & alk? Stable calcium and alkalinity levels in addition to low Phosphates are paramount (not to mention lighting). SPS also like very low nutrients as apposed to softies/LPS. They also require very, very good water movement.

Doni is right on the money!

Metal Halide lighting, several folks use 6,500K 400 watters, is required. Circulation should be 15 - 20 times turn over per hour.

How is your tank set-up for lighting and circulation?
