Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Where can I find nice gorgonians? Or more information on them?

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Another quick update to throw out there...

As of now I am believing crabs are evil... my LTA was undergoing his routine expulsion of its stomach contents, and along came one of my biggest hermit crabs....he ripped out the LTAs stomach! At first I thought the LTA might be okay, it was shriveled up but foot still intact as of last night. Checked on it today, and still was all shriveled up so I picked it out of the water and the tentacles were no longer sticky nor the foot. So out it went....

That crab was banished to the sump, I should've made some crab rangoons out've him.

I also checked all my params just to be sure, because everything else looks fine, but better safe then sorry. Everything was consistent with my log so it must've just been the trauma from the crab.

So now I'm thinking of getting a nice RBTA if I can locate one somewhere, and order it when I get a few new corals.

Ah the ups and downs of reefing.

Check out our Knowledgebase and also try a search for "gorgonian" here and on 'google'.

Sorry to hear about your LTA

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

I honestly don't believe it had anything to do with your crab it was just a free meal for him.

Quote:
There is something coming out of my anemone’s mouth – what is it?
Anemones only have one opening into their digestive system – their mouth. Once they digest a meal, anything that is indigestible (fish bones, etc) will come back out of the mouth when the anemone is done eating. Additionally, anemones will sometimes “deflate” in order to flush wastes out of their system or to balance internal water chemistry. This water will flow in and out of the mouth, and sometimes contains some body slime, etc. Stringy dark brown substance coming out of the anemone’s mouth is usually a bad sign – it is most often an indication that the anemone is expelling its zooxanthellae due to stress or injury.

My LTA would deflate about once a month before, and expelled waste, but that looked a lot different then what happened this weekend. I actually saw the crab grab the "stomach" piece of the LTA when he was expeling waste, and then he tore it out...he stayed deflated all of friday and saturday, and I just took him out last night.

Quote:
Why does my anemone shrink up during the day?
All anemones shrink down periodically to flush wastes and balance water chemistry.
However if your anemone does this frequently (more than a couple times per week) or
stays shrunk for more than an hour or two at a time, you need to look for other factors
that are stressing the anemone.
I believe that the crab was the culprit, because all of the other probable reasons on that site were fine in my tank. I guess I'll really see when I get an RBTA.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Added a couple corals today after a stop at work to pick up snake and gecko food. I decided to pick up a Wells brain that we'd had at work for quite some time, as well as a colony of mushrooms that looked brown w/ a hint of orange spots on them...I figured they'd pop under my MH which is a big improvement from the PCs they were under.

Here's a few pics....

Here are the shrooms under my lighting... a nice purple/blue w/ orange spots

and the brain...

under actinics...

Actinic Full tank shot:

My Halimeda, this piece is now 9-10 inches across, needs a bit of pruning.

Hopefully I can get a bit of $ for the macro, but if anyone would like to trade anything for some by all means make an offer.

Thanks Wit,,, slowly I have been banishing more and more of my crabs to the sump, they can't cause trouble down there but they can eat some detritus.

In my 16 gallon I'm going BB, and crabless! LOL

Hopefully a RBTA will be safe, otherwise it will be getting crab dinners.

Nice JKreef! I bet that bush of halimeda makes a great nursery for pods! I wish my regal would stop eating my halimeda...

Thanks Doni!

I do have a great number of pods, I've checked out the tank at night with a red lens on my flashlight and there are tons of them crawling all over the tank while my mandarin hunts them.

My regal doesn't touch the stuff, too calcerous for him. Plus he's already content with his variety of foods.
