Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Wow, very nice shots and yes that ias a beautiful fish! Take a pic of her gobbling mysis and enter it in the November Photo contest, eh?

With adding that much livestock in a short amount of time, really be on the watch for an ammonia spike. I usually wait a month to six weeks in between fish additions to allow the dentrifying bacteria to increase and stabilize.

Thanks everyone, I'll try to get a shot of her being a little piggy.

In terms of the fish additions, I figured my bioload would be able to handle it, I just recently lost those three 3in. fish.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

You should be in pretty good shape as those three fish would approximate the new additions, but keep an eye out none the less.

Just a thought, my LFS talks about the one fish syndrome in a tank. What they mean by that is there is a physical limit of how many fish your tank can handle, depending on it's overall filtering capacity. When we exceed that capacity we loose fish. I personally believe that I experienced this phenomenon of total fish capacity in my 80 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump/refugium, and it was less than I had anticipated.

I reduced my fish limit by one after I lost several small fish after adding them to my tank, and to my suprise the fish remaining grew at a substantially greater rate than when my tank was at or slightly over it's stocking limit.

Good luck and keep those pics coming!

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Thanks Craig and Cheeks.

I have not seen her anywhere near the maxima, and have been checking it out just in case she's gone to play while I'm away, and no damage to the mantle...so I have to assume she's behaving, but I will keep an eye on her.

New arrivals in about 8 hours! Better get some sleep soon I suppose.

Oh by the way, my other project arrived in perfect condition today...

You sirs...are correct. Never even let that little girl touch the water at work, I acclimated her on my break.

I'll let ya know how she acts Jid, however each fish will have their individual personality...so best of luck if you get one.

The shipment is all acclimated and in the tank adjusting. The squamosa is open and looking happy, linckia is cruising around looking for a bite, the purple firefish is swimming around like he's been there forever, and then theres the cleaner shrimp, all of my fish are swimming around him just waiting for a quick bath...

I'll post some pictures, but,,,I work in a little bit, so they'll be up tonight.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Well...I've gotten lazy with updates lately. Since the last my tank has hit the 6 month mark, and a few things have really started to take off.

Finally my Pulsing Xenia has started to split and spread. I started with a two stalk frag, and now the main colony have 7 branches, and another little 4 branch frag from that. A piece of the 4 branch frag since yesterday has attached itself to the front glass. I didn't know it could accomplish that so quickly.

The LTA has also grown nicely since it was placed in the tank, I can say I'm proud of myself to be able to keep it alive thus far...

Another sweet thing is that a few of my zoo colonies are now not only spreading on the existing rock, but traveling to new pieces, I can always use some fragacillin to get my 16g project moving.

And since the addition of a small 2"x2" piece of halimeda, it is now a massive colony approx 7" across and very thick, so I may prune some of that and take it to work for a bit of credit.

All in all the tank is progressing nicely, despite the constant plucking of valonia algae, for now I'm just letting every stay settled. However a few days ago I did acquire a nice Red/orange Monti cap. frag so we'll see how that goes.

All of the Fish are doing great, especially my CBB (Houdini) he's quite a character, swimming about like he owns the place, and eating mysis shrimp like a pig, he had a bad habit of making my featherdusters disappear (hence the name. LOL)

But at least now that behavior has stopped. My female lyretail anthias (Hera) has now calmed down...well now that she's the only anthias in the tank, she was a war loving fish while he sisters were in the tank, but she quickly decimated the competitors.

All of the other fish are also still fat and happy, I'll try to get some pics of each of them as well as the rest of the tank.

Well thats all for now.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

It's hard to tell from the full tank shots, but since the last FTS two months ago, the growth of a lot of the stuff has been crazy.

Many of the SPS frags have put on a decent amount of size, and the zoo colonies have finally started taking off and climbing off of the rocks they were attached to.

I couldn't get a decent picture of it, but my candycane that had 4 heads when I received it now has 12-13.

The biggest change has been the pulsing xenia, it started off as two stalks, and I got one frag from that, a piece that moved onto the front glass; and now the main colony is 7 stalks.

I still want to add more corals, get a few more SPS colonies in there as well as a few nice LPS corals. I would also like to add a few leather corals that will later go in the 16 gallon.

My fish are all doing good, no more homicide going on in the tank. I thought for sure my yellow watchman goby was dead, but I was peering through my live rock last night, and found him hiding in a cave.

Well that's all for now. If anyone has some ideas for a nice showpiece coral let me know, I'm up for ideas.

Hope you enjoyed the update!

Jason
