Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Blue throats are fine with inverts. However, imo, a 75 gallon reef tank my be a little crowded for these guys with all the live rock. Although I wouldn't call it cruel to keep one in there.

I actually went light on my liverock, and the way it's scaped the upper 50% of my tank is open swimming room...so I think I'll add the trigger to my list.

Thanks mps

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Just remember it's never 100% guaranteed with any trigger that they won't decide to eat some inverts, move some rocks or decide to start tasting various things around the tank. They are extremely intelligent fish that interact with their environment a lot, these guys seem content to swim around most of the day though.
You also might want to take a look at the crosshatch triggers.

AFA as other fish (assuming you don't get the trigger), take a look at the candy hog and swissguard basslet. Two of my favorites.

Triggers, way too risky IMHO!

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

I have a Blue Throat and he's not completely reefsafe. I tried to add a red banded pistol shrimp and as soon as I added it the Trigger chased after him and although I didn't actually see him eat the shrimp he disappeard. Also if you don't see him eating at the LFS don't get him since they can be a challenge to convert to prepared foods.

Thanks guys, I always like to hear the hard truth. Right now there are just a few fish on my list, and the Blue throat is still one of them... I've heard that with the blue throats they can be okay if the inverts are already in the tank when they are added. If I were to purchase him, I'd probably go through marinedepotlive.com again, their customer service was exceptional, and they don't send out fish unless it is eating prepared foods. But for now,,, he's just a dream on my list.

I'm not sure which one of my fish is doing it, but I have something in my tank that is moving LR rubble throughout my tank, so that wouldn't really bother me...I'll look into the crosshatch as well as the candy hog and swissguard.

Thanks again.

Here's the "list" so far in no particular order:
Scribbled Rabbitfish - Siganus doliatus
Blue Throat Trigger - Xanthichthys auromarginatus
Six Line Wrasse - Pseudocheilinus hexataenia
Ruby Head Fairy Wrasse- Cirrhilabrus cyanopleura
Scott's Fairy Wrasse- Cirrhilabrus scottorum
Purple Firefish Goby- Nemateleotris decora
Tricolor Fairy Wrasse- Cirrhilabrus lubbocki
Copperbanded Butterflyfish- Chelmon rostratus ?? ( If I could find one that eats prepared foods)
Yellow-Fin Fairy Wrasse

That's all I got right now

Any of the colorful wrasses or the purple firefish

I've wanted those for a while myself. Do the firefish tend to jump? Seems I remember reading that somewhere....

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

As you know, your list is too long for your 75 gallon, as the adult fish would be over crowded. Oh, shucks, you've got to get a bigger tank!

LOL! A larger tank would be nice...but to clarify, I would choose ONE fish from the list.

Thanks Sharkbait...

I'm secretly leaning towards the CBB, now I just have to find one that is eating and is in good shape.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Well I've decided to go with the CBB. I talked to another manager where I work who does the fish orders. He told me there was a CBB on the list, the distributor has always had them in perfect shape, and eating prepared foods. I told him to go ahead and order one for me,,,so the little lady is going to be coming in tomorrow to come home with me. After she's acclimated I'll post some pics.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Well...I'm excited for the new CBB to come in later today.

But... earlier today I was watching my tank, as that rogue female lyretail anthias was relentlessly chasing another to exhaustion, and took a huge chunk from it's tail. Well I netted the bully, and put her it "time out" for a while to give the other a break, but I found out it was too late tonight when my peppermint shrimp started to clean up the deceased... I loved them as a schooling fish, but this female will not let any competitor for dominance live in her presence. Unfortunately there was always the possibility because all being females I figured they would fight for status to become male, but it really hit me until it became reality, three times... I will never put another group of anthias in my tank,,,only one male with one female at most.

Just to be sure it wasn't from any other outside cause, I tested my water, and it all checked out.

The final two females seem to get along just fine,,,if there start to be problems I may have to save one and take it to the LFS where I work.
