Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Quick question...may be dumb, but here goes.

I want to add more rock structure to my tank, but don't want to go the expense of more liverock, and the process of curing it in a separate bin. So I was wondering if the rocked deemed "reefer-rock" (dried out, previously LR) would cause any sort of a cycle? I know it would be completely dead, but would that dead dried matter cause a cycle, or would it even affect my system to add it.

I was just wondering because we have some really nice pieces of this at work, and I want to pick some up because it's only $1.99 per pound and then I'd get my discount.

What do you all think, would I be alright adding it to my system without having to worry about a cycle?

I would like to go this route because of the money I'd be saving, and it would eventually "liven up" anyways, and with my coraline growth it should be covered in no time.

Jason

There should be little or no cylcle with well dried rock. Just soak in salt water and clean off the dust, dried detritus, with a power head. Your tank will seeed it with bacteria in due time.

Great! Just what I needed to know You're always such a huge help Craig, karma to you! I will probably be picking up the rock on payday (Wednesday). Now it just depends how much more that I want to add...20...30...40...or 50lbs? I guess it depends on how much we actually have for me at work.

No problem, dude, that's what we're here for!

About 120 to 130 lbs of LR + or - depending on density should be perfect for your 75 gallon tank. Make sure to leave enough room for your fish to swim the full length of your tank in the upper 1/3 of the water column. Fish are lateral not vertical swimmers.

As of right now I already have approx 65-70lbs, and I definitely want to leave room for the fish to swim, but with my rock right now they have the upper half of the tank to swim, I would like to change my rockwork into two islands instead of one central and move the rock closer to the back glass to make more room for sand dwelling clams and corals for the front (ideally a bay shape for clams)

We'll see what happens, I'll let you all know on Thursday or Friday.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Well I didn't end up buying the rock this time around, my funds went elsewhere....but somewhere down the line I'll add a bit o' rock.

Noticed two cool things this morning:
1.) Caught a cerith snail laying a clutch of eggs. I had found the egg strands about two other times, and have seen tiny snails crawling about my tank, but couldn't tell what variety of snails they were...but now I know who the culprit is!

The eggs look something like this:

and I find a few new strands about every two weeks.

2.) I'm not sure what is up with my LTA, but it's gotten really big since I purchased it, and is looking really healthy, but it looks as if another mouth is forming, because now the LTA is in a figure 8 sort of shape I couldn't really get a good picture of it, so I'll try taking one and posting it later. I just wonder if it's going to split?

And with the loss of two of my anthias a week ago, I was thinking about filling the gap with a small fish. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I was thinking a small reef-safe wrasse, but then again, I don't have a cover on my tank, so I don't need a carpet surfer. what do you all think?

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

If you have a docile reef community with lots of safe zones, Fairy Wrasses, Cirhillabrus, would be a good choice.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

I was thinking a Yellow-Fin Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus flavidorsalis), but we have a Scott's Fairy Wrasse at work that is 4" for $56 after my discount... aren't fairy wrasses prone to jumping?

Otherwise, I was thinking about getting another Sixline Wrasse they are such an attractive and active fish.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Fairy wrasses are not inclined to jump as the Flashers IME. The caveat is as stated above, docile tank mates and good hidingspots/safe zones.

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

Thanks Craig, I have really peaceful tankmates but they are really active...there are hiding spots throughout the tank, and when I plan on getting more rock added there should be a few more spots to hide.

I'm inclined towards the Yellow-Fin, but we'll see what else catches my eye. LOL

Re: JKreef's 75 Gallon Project

I know this might sound absurd, but would it at all be possible to put in a Blue Throat Trigger... Supposedly one of the few "reef-safe" triggers, and if kept well fed would it be okay with inverts? They are a truly beautiful fish I would love to add one if possible. And quite frankly, I wouldn't mind if it took out some of my homicidal hermits. LOL

Good/Bad? Or any other suggestions for fish?
