Always, I've never trusted the swingarm types and it's very hard to measure with a floating type SG meter. So in my opinion a refractometer is the only way to go.

By the way, the salinity is now at 1.016 in the QT tank now, I have one more change out to do this afternoon to get it to the targeted 1.009 and the Regal shows no signs of ich now. When it went in there where lots of small salt like looking spots all over it. The tang is out and about eating and hiding and checking things out, it doesn't seemed stressed at all.

Well all we are back from the Keys in one piece, I really didn't want to come back.
For those of you that are fishermen, we brought home 62 mahi. Yes we had a very successful fishing trip. The tank is fine, little over grown with algae and it needs a little cleaning. The QT fish are all fine with not a spot of ich on them, so I figure another 3 to 4 weeks and they will be ready to go back to the main display. Here is a pic of one days catch on the keys.

Great news on your tank! Hope you didn't worry much.
WOW! That is a good day fishing. Mahi one of my favorite filets.
Where are you going to put them all?

Well I did worry about the tank a day or two in the beginning then I didn't even really think about it again until the drive home.

I couldn't catch the 6 line before I left and was affraid he would get the ich as well, but I was pleasantly supprised to see that there is not a spot on him when I returned. I figure he will have to come out for the 4 to 6 week period into QT so that I can be sure the tank is ich free.

All the filets are in vacume sealed freezer bags in my freezer at home, their next stop will be in my tummy..... hehehehehehe.

Well I got a suprise last night, just before we went to bed I checked on the tank (habit) and found tons of little animals in the tank. At first I though they where brine shrimp, but I had fed at least 3 hours earlier, so I turned back on the light to find hundreds of tiny baby shrimp in my tank swimming around. There are no fish in my tank currently (all in QT) so I'm hopping a few will survive, but they seem to be free swimming at this early stage in their lives and most where being sucked up by the overflow.

Has anyone had any success with catching these little guys and keeping them in some kind of in tank container (like a fry raiser) and growing them up a bit? And what would I feed them?

Thanks

Probably mysis shrimp which would be the natural diet for most reef fish. I suppose you could raise them just as they do rotifers. You need to feed them the appropriate micro aglea/plankton to sustain them.

Congrats on good animal husbandry practices. Tanks are full of neat suprises, eh?

Sorry I forgot to mention that I know what they are.... my peppermint shrimp have been carring eggs for about 4 to 6 weeks now and one of them let all these little guys go last night. I still have two or three more that are ready to go as well and wass looking for some quick info on how to attempt to raise them.

Thanks,

If they are baby peppermint shrimps, their life cycle begins with a long planktonic stage of several weeks to several months before they actual settle onto the substrate. Rearing them from what I've read is difficult at best in our closed systems. My harlequins and skunk cleaners have spawned many times only to feed the corals/fish. I will try to find some info on it for you.

How To Raise & Train Your Peppermint Shrimp

Quote:
Authored by April Kirkendoll, this marine shrimps aquaculturing book is one we recommend for aquarists of all levels. "How To Raise & Train Your Peppermint Shrimp" is well organized and takes you in logical, simple to understand steps from describing the shrimp, to how to build the equipment required, to the breeding, hatching, feeding process, and beyond.

Description - 147 pages of text with black and white drawings throughout.
Price - Low Range
Publisher - Lysmata Publishing
ISBN #0996778421 (Paperback; 2002)
Even if you aren't planning to raise and/or train your own Peppermint Shrimp, this book is an excellent read. April Kirkendoll's style of writing leaves you with the impression that she is sitting across the kitchen table, sharing some very interesting experiences, rather than droning on and on from behind the dias in a college lecture hall.

Every chapter is filled with first hand information, gleaned from 17 years of work as a professional aquaculturist and marine aquarist. As you can tell by the chapter names and descriptions outlined below, this book is well organized and takes you in logical steps from describing the shrimp, to how to build the equipment required, to the breeding, care and feeding process, and beyond.

Well I have been fairly successful in raising stuff no one else seems to be able to raise, just lucky I guess or just a perfectionist. But if I do I will definatly be ready to unload a few.
